The connection between watches and space travel has proven to be one of the most marketable approaches for watch brands to take when launching their products. But, with the exception of an elite few, these connections are often convoluted, forced, and at times, unsubstantiated. Werenbach, a young Zurich-based company, is seeking to create a new connection between outer space, the watches they make, and the customers who wear them. With materials sourced from the actual Soyuz MS-02 Spaceflight and new digital features, the Werenbach Mach 33 collection aims to provide wearers with a comfortable and stylish watch that also allows them to pause and reflect on aspects of their humanity.
Named after the escape velocity needed to overcome Earth’s gravity, the Werenbach Mach 33 watches are available in both 42mm and 38mm case sizes. In addition to the Soyuz rocket material incorporated directly into the dial, one of the key features found in these new watches is a small, built-in microchip. By means of NFC technology wearers can link the watch directly to a smartphone and immediately receive a current livestream of the ISS High Definition Earth Viewing System (HDEV). The idea behind this feature is to allow wearers briefly experience the “overview effect” by connecting with four ISS stationed cameras. Additionally, wearers can gather unique data relevant to their watch and information about the specific rocket piece built into the dial.
These Werenbach Mach 33 watches are also produced with a monocoque case housing. This means each case is milled from a single metal block as one piece, resulting in a design that has no caseback. Water resistance is 5 ATM and every variant is fitted with a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal over the dial. Powering it all is the Miyota Quartz GM10 movement, a fine choice that’s both durable and low-maintenance.
Looking at the dial, wearers are greeted with a clean layout on both the “Classic” and “Sport” versions. Large broadsword-style hands allow for high-contrast viewing and an application of Super-LumiNova supports low-light legibility. Above 6 o’clock, a small cutout displays the actual Soyuz rocket material fitted onto the dial and a basic date window is found at 3 o’clock. Perhaps the sportiest variant is the “Planet 9,” which features a completely blacked out case, strap, and dial with high contrast white minute and hour scales.
No matter which variant you choose, the Werenbach Mach 33 collection is sure to impress. Each model offers a unique opportunity to connect with outer space in a very personal way and Werenbach is proud to continue their development of this fun and entertaining technology. Depending on the model, pre-sale prices range between 179 CHF and 279 CHF. You can learn more by visiting Werenbach’s official site. werenbach.ch
