Panerai is an Italian-Swiss maker of luxury timepieces and is a fully owned subsidiary of the Richemont luxury holding company. Panerai’s watches chiefly fall within the Luminor and Radiomir series. In addition to numerous appearances on screen in Hollywood films since the 1990s, Panerai currently carries a robust presence in the sport of yacht racing, sponsoring the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli team in the America’s Cup sailing race and acting as an official partner for German luxury sports boat brand BRABUS. Panerai is perhaps the best known of all Italian luxury watch brands.
Panerai was founded in 1860 in Florence by Giovanni Panerai. The brand’s iconic series of dive watches began in 1938 when Panerai began producing specialized timepieces for the Italian Navy for use by its combat divers. Although Panerai maintains a headquarters in Florence, its manufacturing center is in Neuchâtel, Switzerland. Many of Panerai’s movements are manufactured in-house and offer excellent performance.
Most Panerai watches follow the brand’s signature cushion case profile, but within this signature look its watches range from simple dressy two-hand designs to wildly complex skeletonized sports watches in innovative materials. Panerai watches are popular with watch enthusiasts and mainstream luxury buyers alike and are prized for their historic role in the development of the dive watch as well as their bold sizing and distinctive Italian style.
