Having enjoyed worldwide success with previous models, UNDONE looks to capitalize on the brand’s current popularity with the launch of the UNDONE Type XX. For this next project, UNDONE will take to the skies and hit the history books for inspiration. Joining the growing choice of highly customizable wristwatches, The UNDONE Type XX will be an homage to the famous aviation watches worn by fighter pilots in WWII.
The refined styling of the UNDONE Type XX comes down to the designers’ strict adherence to the source material. Very little has been changed from the original designs, due to their high popularity among the serving officers and excellent legibility.
At 41.8mm in diameter (excluding the crown) and 12.1mm-thick, the UNDONE Type XX is slightly larger than most military watches from the era from which this collection draws inspiration, but the sizing is tailored for a modern audience that demands versatility from their wristwatches. Topping the stainless steel cases is a hardened and domed K1 crystal for impressive durability and clarity. A rotating coin-edge bezel with a prominent 12 o’clock marker enables simple timing functions to be performed separately from the chronograph function.
The Type XX from UNDONE features three colorways and will slot into the existing Urban collection, which has been the brand’s bestselling line thus far. All three watches will boast “big eye” sub-dials, which were particularly popular with pilots because of their legibility. For a traditional look, both the “Classic” and “Panda” models recall era-appropriate color schemes. For a more contemporary look, there will be a special-edition option, available in just 150 pieces.
This modern iteration of the Type XX comes with a black case and sets white “big eye” sub-dials against a black dial, which is brought to life by light blue Arabic numerals. In keeping with the color theme, the white sub-dials and hands both glow blue (instead of the more traditional green) in low light conditions. The “Special Edition” Type XX comes on a black Cordura strap with a second black strap (of the customer’s choice) included in the box for $350.
All three versions of the UNDONE Type XX are powered by the reliable Seiko VK64 mecha-quartz movement, which features a mechanical 60-minute sweeping chronograph hand with immediate reset function. The advantage of hybrid movements such as the VK64 is the increased accuracy and reliability of a quartz watch and the visual enjoyment (and split-second accuracy) of a sweeping chronograph seconds hand.
Typically, UNDONE offers many customization options for these new watches. The Panda and the Classic models, which start at $315, both have 14 different strap options in varying materials and textures, for example. For all models, either limited or unlimited, the owner’s initials can be added at the 12 o’clock position, creating a truly personalized product for less than $500. In addition to this optional dial customization, casebacks can also be customized with glass, engravings, and prints. The UNDONE Type XX will be released online on June 19th. Shipping will commence in early July 2019. For more information and to order your very own Type XX, check out undone.com.
