Inspired by their hometown of Málaga, Spain, ToW (Time of Watches) founders Carlos and Mariano established their own watch brand to focus on automotive designs like their latest Gibralfaro Automatic watch. As a timepiece that pays tribute to the Gibralfaro Rally, the ToW Gibralfaro Automatic blends ’70s racing chronograph styling, sharp case design, and comfort into an accessible product that is simply fun to wear.
While it’s clear that the ToW Gibralfaro automatic pulls from established automotive design language, the execution is slightly more subtle than what most buyers are probably used to. As a result, it’s a watch with distinct character and a restrained, yet versatile look. Specifically, ToW decided to center the watch’s dial design around the dashboard instruments found on classic rally cars. In addition, ToW opted for a custom modular case produced with a variety of brushed and polished finishes that allow the watch to stand out on wrist.
Looking at the dial, one of the most prominent features of the watch is its power reserve indicator positioned at 12 o’clock. Together with the applied indices and minimal date window at 6 o’clock the watch serves as a simple and legible instrument with enough of an automotive vibe for those that are drawn to it. Additionally, the seconds hand and the power reserve hand were also designed with dashboard instruments in mind. Case size is kept conservative at 41mm with a lug to lug distance of 48mm and a 13.2mm case thickness. There are two dial options available (black or white) and water resistance is rated at 100m even with the display caseback.
Above the dial, the ToW Gibralfaro automatic is fitted with a doubled-domed sapphire crystal featuring internal AR coating. Customers will also be able to choose from various pledge options that include either a full leather NATO, a racing style strap inspired by micro-perforated leather seats and steering wheels, or both. All leather accessories offered by ToW are hand crafted in Spain with carefully selected materials for both the straps and the travel case. There is even an available watch roll that customers will be able to select. Careful attention to detail can also be found in the packaging, which mimics boxes that typically come with smaller, spare automotive parts.
