Based in Denmark and the Czech Republic, Talidara is a brand best known for producing custom-made-to-order jewelry pieces. However, as the two related worlds of watches and jewelry can often intersect and overlap, Talidara is branching out and expanding its offerings for 2023 with the creation of its very first wristwatch. Known as the “Heiwa,” the model’s name translates to “peace” in Japanese, and rather than being designed as a precision timekeeping instrument for use in stressful, high-intensity scenarios, the Talidara Heiwa embraces a colorful and artful design, and it is intended to be a wearable reminder to slow down and enjoy the time that we have.
The external case of the Talidara Heiwa watch measures a versatile 35mm in diameter by 12mm thick (not including the lugs), and it features a square-shaped profile that provides plenty of visual presence, while still being able to comfortably fit on most sizes of wrists. Weighing in at 80 grams and crafted from stainless steel and ceramic, the case of the Talidara Heiwa embraces a vibrant red and white color profile, and it consists of a three-layer construction, with a bright red middle case band sandwiched between upper and lower sections that appear in crisp white ceramic.
Rather than featuring a traditional pressure-fit or threaded design, the case components of the Talidara Heiwa are connected by six small screws that run through either side of the watch and securely hold it all together. Additionally, while a square crystal is fitted to the front side of the watch and protects its dial, the reverse side of the case also receives a secondary clear display window, and the circular aperture in the caseback allows users to look directly at the self-winding mechanical movement that powers the watch. Operating the Talidara Heiwa is achieved through the signed winding crown at the 3 o’clock location, which appears in a bright shade of red to match the middle of the case, and to protect against daily incidental moisture contact, the Talidara Heiwa is also accompanied by 30 meters of water resistance.
The dial fitted to the Talidara Heiwa emulates the appearance of traditional Japanese paintings, and it depicts a peaceful mountain range with the rising sun appearing above the horizon line at the top of the dial. Bright red Arabic numeral hour markers in a stylized typeface appear along the periphery of the dial, while a square-shaped railroad-style minute track is printed along their interior perimeter. Additionally, while the hour and minute hand offer a sharp dauphine shape and are filled with green-glowing luminous material for superior low-light visibility, the bright red seconds hand offers a striking and highly unusual appearance that echoes the fluid and asymmetric shape of a branch or root of a tree.
Powering the new “Heiwa” watch is the Talidara Caliber XX8 automatic movement, which is a modified version of the venerable Swiss-made ETA 2824. As the Talidara Cal. XX8 is based upon the gear train and core architecture of this highly popular self-winding movement, it runs at a frequency of 28,800vph (4 Hz), while also offering users a power reserve of approximately 38 hours. In addition to benefiting from the same proven design that is universally regarded for its reliability, the Talidara Cal. XX8 fitted to the “Heiwa” also features a custom skeletonized oscillating weight that features gold-filled engraving and mirrors the organic flowing shape of the second hand.
Fitted to the lugs of the Talidara Heiwa is a white leather strap with matching red and white contrast stitching; however, three additional rubber straps are also included with the watch, and all of them feature integrated quick-release springbars to allow users to easily switch up the style of their timepiece. Alongside smooth rubber straps in red and white to match the case of the watch is a perforated black rubber strap with a diamond pattern throughout its surface, and all of the various strap options are completed by pin buckles with either a stainless steel or black PVD finish.
Assembled in Denmark, which is the birthplace of Talidaras founder Frederik Ehlers, the new “Heiwa” watch will be produced as an exclusive limited edition of just 88 pieces, and each individual example will have its unique number from 01 to 88 engraved upon its caseback. Included with the watch and its trio of alternate rubber straps are a warranty card, certificate of authenticity, owner’s booklet, and the tool used to access the star-shaped screws that hold the case of the watch together. Packaged in a polymer flight case to ensure that everything stays safe, the limited-edition Talidara Heiwa watch is accompanied by an official retail price of $2,800 USD, and it is available for order now, with delivery scheduled for November 2023.
