Established in 2015, Straton Watch Co. has successfully launched multiple watches inspired by ’70s chronographs. Models to date include the Curve Chrono, Syncro, and Speciale models.

Straton Syncro

Straton Speciale

I would like to take this opportunity to present the latest ’70s inspired chronographs which will launch in 2018 for pre-order. The first of two designs is the Straton Legera. The Legera consists of a similar dial layout offered in two different case styles and sizes. Since starting Straton Watch Co. I have a wanted to design a ’70s inspired Bullhead chronograph. One of my personal favorites is the Breitling Chrono-Matic and Pupitre Bullhead chronographs from the ’70s. One will see similarities in the case design between my Legera Bullhead and the Pupitre, however putting my own flare into it by adding a chamfered edge, slightly larger surface area around the bezel, and the raised crown position. The second design for the Legera is a case with a standard 3 o’clock crown position. The reason for creating a second case design with the same dial is that while some will find the Bullhead case appealing, others will not.

The Straton Legera Bullhead will be offered in a 42mm case size, while the Straton Legera with the standard crown position will be offered in a 44mm case size. I know some of you are thinking “why not smaller?” Unfortunately movements determine the thickness of a watch, and automatic chronographs are generally quite thick. Not having the budget to produce a thinner in-house mechanical chronograph movement, I have to use what’s available to me. Proportions are important and a
watch’s proportions should be in line with its width and thickness, which is why 42m and 44mm sizes were chosen for these respective watches.

Both the Legera watches will be offered in five color versions and two movement choices. To watch enthusiasts the movement is an integral part of owning a watch and a mechanical movement is a must in most cases. Therefore the Legera models will be offered with a choice of either the Valjoux 7750/7753 Automatic by ETA or VK63/67 meca-quartz hybrid movements by Seiko.

The expected pricing for the Legera models by pre-order is as follows: Valjoux Automatic models will start from around $899 for the pre-order ($1,199 retail) and $320 for the meca-quartz pre-order ($499 retail). The pre-order launch is planned on the Straton website for September 2018. Currently prototypes are nearing completion and will be shown/reviewed prior and during the pre-order stage.
