If there’s one particular style of tool watch that is universally accepted, it’s the dive watch. Something about them always calls back to the great history of watchmaking innovation, and visions of the Cousteau Calypso adventures. Paying homage to these golden days of diving, is Spinnaker’s new line of Croft watches.
The Croft line of dive watches is named after Robert Croft, a US Navy diver who became the first human to free dive to a depth of 200ft back in 1967 – an impressive feat regardless of the time period. The Croft series of watches are of course dive watches, measuring in at 43mm in diameter, with a case thickness of 12mm, and cases made of stainless steel. The watch is secured to your wrist with a leather strap, which matches the dial color of your choice. If leather isn’t your thing, the Croft series sports 22mm lugs, making alternative straps a breeze.
Beating inside the Croft series (and visible through the display caseback) is a Miyota 8218, a Japanese automatic movement with a 40 hour power reserve and 21 jewels, that ticks along at 21,600bph. Miyota has been making its way into more and more watches, and for good reason. The movements are reliable, easily serviceable, and keep great time. This movement displays a sub-dial at 4:30 for the running seconds, and features a date at the 3 o’clock position. The watch features a sapphire crystal, with a cyclops magnifier over the date – not something seen too often outside of a few specific brands. And of course with its dive watch style and specifications, the Spinnaker Croft is water-resistant to 150m.
The dial design of the Croft series is quite unique. In the watch world, it can be easy to look at watch designs and spot what it reminds you of, but in the case of the Croft line, the dial and case design are quite distinct. The Croft series is available in black, blue, green, and brown colorways (bronze colored case optional), all sporting fumée dials.
The hands and hour markers are all lumed with Super-LumiNova, and depending on the colorway, either have gilt or have silver colored surrounds. The Croft has a unidirectional dive style bezel, with an aluminum insert that is color matched to the dial. In addition to the color matching, the bezel is 120 clicks, which no doubt will give it a satisfying feel whilst using the bezel.
With the Croft line, Spinnaker has released a line of vintage inspired dive watches paying respect to diving pioneer Robert Croft. The Spinnaker Croft is a nicely designed, colorful dive watch, providing a lot of value and style for the price. It’s not often that you can find a well done fumée dial with a color matched bezel, unique design, reliable Miyota movement, and even a cyclops all together on the same watch, let alone for this price. The Spinnaker Croft is available for $320 from Spinnaker’s web store. aBlogtoWatch readers can also purchase the Spinnaker Croft for 30% off by using the code ABW30 at checkout. spinnaker-watches.com
