I know, it is cheesy – but, I think, in a good way. Unlike Audemars Piguet with watches like the Royal Oak Offshore Survivor, Richard Mille didn’t want to just make a cool looking watch. It wanted to make one that would help you survive just a few more days until you can find someone willing to trade their plane for your Richard Mille so that you can fly yourself home like a boss.
You also better believe that Richard Mille is pairing a camouflage colored rubber traps with the Tourbillon Adventure because wearing camouflage on your body is a guaranteed way to have an adventure just by leaving the house. Let’s appreciate the simple irony that wearing camouflage today is about being more noticeable rather than less noticeable.
Going back to the watch itself, when you remove the compass bezel you can attach it to a plate with the bayonet mount which turns it into a map-style compass that can be attached to a clip or lanyard. The other bi-directionally rotating bezel has three scales which allow for various survival calculations such as the compass direction using the sun and 24 hour scale. In typical Richard Mille style and inspired by his love of high-end machines, the RM 25-01 Tourbillon Adventure is a colorful montage of instrument-inspired indicators and markers.
Like his contemporary, Arnold Schwarzenegger (also a very accomplished watch collector), Sylvester Stallone is a stocky man known for liking his watches sized large. The RM 25-01 Tourbillon Adventure’s case is produced from titanium and Carbon TPT with 100 meters of water resistance. Without the crowns it is 50.85 millimeters wide and with them it is perhaps over 55 millimeters wide. Despite all the information about the Tourbillon Adventure watch, Richard Mille has not elaborated further on the case dimensions… Though they have promised that it will look formidable on the wrist.
The adult watch lover in me appreciates the level of detail in creating such a thoroughly legitimate fantasy toy as imagined for a character by the actor who played that character – for the first time some 36 years ago when the film First Blood originally debuted in 1982. If I was just getting into Rambo now or if the film came out today, I would be irritated that the character – so celebrated for his keen practicality and almost monastic efficiency would have a watch that to purchase for myself was so unfathomably unaffordable. A timepiece like this can only ever work as a celebration production looking back on the legacy of a lasting story. America still celebrates its soldier heroes – real or imagined – with a hungry appetite. It offers men’s luxury product (as well as movie-) makers ingredients for so much more and the Richard Mille RM 25-01 Tourbillon Adventure Sylvester Stallone is the latest scrumptious morsel to nibble on. Price once again is $983,000 USD. richardmille.com
