Votum is a watch brand from Biel, Switzerland, producing exquisite mechanical timepieces since 1962. The brand was at its peak in the ’60s when the cosmopolitan city of Biel confirmed its positioning amongst the most influential cities in the watchmaking industry. The already flourishing watch metropolis, paved the way to further developments in the watch manufacturing industry, granting essential access to the desired know-how required to produce unique state-of-the-art jewelry watches.
In the beginning of the ’70s, following the reorganization of the company and the relocation to Hamburg, Germany, the watch brand reached another milestone with the sheer wonder of its innovation, harmoniously incorporated into modern timepieces. The unpredictable retreat of the brand into oblivion inspired award-winning watchmaker Francois Zahnd to collaborate with graphic designer Rolf Bodmer in pursuit of the renaissance of the Votum Watch brand, marking a new chapter in the brand’s history.
The passion for mechanical Swiss watches is shared by Zurich-born designer and graphic artist Rolf Bodmer, born in 1957, and watch manufacturer and watch expert François Zahnd, born in Biel in 1961. The two men met at an industry event in the summer of 2015 and decided to revive the dormant watch brand.
A striking dial design was reinterpreted by the pair in the “Heritage” model, and some elements such as the small seconds and rotating bezel were incorporated in the first collection. Initially, the production of the new Votum watches is limited to men’s models, with the makers being well aware that women are fond of men’s watch sizes too.
They say it’s inner beauty that counts. This is exactly true for Votum. Just like a beating heart, the balance wheel in a mechanical watch is always moving, driving the wheels and hands. But of course a person’s most unique feature is the face. Again, true for Votum as well. No bells and whistles needed on these dials. They stand out for their simplicity, balance, and classical beauty.
The distinctive simplicity of the models is emphasized in the general design of the watches. Everything is made to withstand the rigors of modern life while telling a story of its own in the most unconventional way possible, yet with a classical twist. The elements used in the creation of the watches are carefully selected to achieve an aesthetic balance and comfortable feel on the wrist. It’s straightforward in design and maintains the wonder of timepieces as products we can own and admire for lifetimes.
The integration of certain elements such as the bezel of the “Mechanical Date” model is set to elevate the usability and the functionality of the watch but at the same time to keep it as minimalistic as possible. It is an intricate feature never used before in the watchmaking industry, and it allows you to manually use the bezel the same way as for a diver watch. Instead of rotating the bezel to verify the time you spend under water, this never-imagined feature gives you the opportunity to change the date from the 30th of a month directly to the first day of the next month without having to pull the stem to the first position and adjust using the crown.
Votum is not about glitter and glamour, but much rather about sophisticated beauty, low-key shapes and materials, as well as high, Swiss quality. Votum is an expression of the passion and care with which watches are being produced. The revival of the brand it is not intended to create another line of common watches with no identity whatsoever, but to bring to the watchmaking world our unique philosophy and a new depth of retro-modern brand recognition.
