One of my favorite watches that I describe as the Japanese Rolex GMT Master II is available on eBay as lightly pre-owned. I discussed the Grand Seiko GMT Spring Drive watch here. These are a very limited edition, Japan-only watch, and seldom come to the US. In fact, this one is being sold from Singapore, but through eBay it might as well be next door to you (shipping is free). One of the best features of this watch that it shares with the new Rolex Submariner series is the ceramic bezel that will not scratch. This is often the first place on a nice watch to show wear, and use of a ceramic bezel precludes that. The numbers are inset withing the black ceramic compound.
Use of the Seiko Spring Drive movement makes this watch accurate (quartz regulation), mechanically operated, and practically worry free. I simply cannot wait to get my hands on a Spring Drive based watch soon. As such, the movements are expensive and limited being available for only a few years. Because this Grand Seiko GMT Spring Drive is pre-owned, the price is below retails at a relatively fair $4,900 considering the stellar condition it is in. Along with the original steel bracelet, the watch comes with a German water-proof black leather strap. Ideal for missions where a metal bracelet is best left home.
Along with the GMT complication in this watch, the Spring Drive movement always provides a power reserve indicator, which is certainly useful. The bracelet design is taken from Omega and Tag Heuer, but the case itself is all an homage to Rolex, with a Japanese twist. Seiko did a wonderful job adding classy features such as raised number indicators, and well-engraved back and crown (placed in Seiko’s traditional 4 o’clock position). A stellar and capable watch worth having around during the best of times and the worst of times.
