The new American brand Pharos introduces the Sentinel and Sentinel B watches today via a Kickstarter campaign. The two models, the full lume dial Sentinel and the more traditional Sentinel B, are the result of two years of development by founders Craig Karger and Alex Davis. The brand’s design offers a bold and distinctive take on a dive watch, using elements inspired by lighthouses and, more specifically, the Pharos of Alexandria, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
While the multi-layered lume dial of the Sentinel might be the most apparent feature of the watch, the case detailing, featuring a notched bezel and profile, adds additional complexity. All models also include a lumed logo in the crown, an interesting nuance seen on very few watches.
The full lume Sentinel is a more distinct, rather avant-garde, offering from the brand. The white dial variation remains a little more subdued, without much dial contrast.
The black and blue Sentinels, however, are highlighted by two-tone dials fit for someone with more eclectic taste. All models use green lume, with the exception of the full lume blue dial Sentinel, which opts for blue lume.
The Sentinel B is more reminiscent of a traditional dive watch, while still maintaining distinctive brand features. The Sentinel B forgoes a full lume dial in favor of a ring of lume connecting the hour markers. Like the Sentinel, the Sentinel B has a lumed crown, a feature standard across Pharos’s entire initial offering. The Sentinel B is available in two colors, a very nice sunburst green, and classic sunburst blue.
All Sentinel cases measure at 41mm wide, 9mm thick, and 48mm lug-to-lug. The case, which features notched sides and bezel, includes a classic crown guard protecting the screw-down lumed crown as well as a sapphire crystal. The caseback has an artistic but accurate artist’s representation of the Pharos of Alexandria. Pharos made the deliberate choice not to have a display caseback, in order to make sure the watch could handle the pressure of deep-water diving without any problems.
Another small detail not to be missed on all Sentinel models is the second hand’s eclipse effect. The second hand was customized to pass perfectly over the circular hour indices, causing them to eclipse the indices every ten seconds.
As dive watches, the Sentinel and Sentinel B are water resistant to 200 meters. The lume is made from Swiss SuperLuminova and models include green lume and blue lume. Customers are able to choose whether to have their watch hands’ lume contrast or be consistent with the dial lume. All watches run on a Swiss Automatic Sellita SW200 movement.
The Pharos Sentinel launches today on Kickstarter. The early bird price for all watches is $499 USD, with shipping available worldwide. Every watch comes with a lacquer display box, along with a leather strap and a rubber strap available in multiple color options. An additional $40 will also get you a fitted metal bracelet, in addition to the leather and rubber straps. Make sure to check the campaign out here. pharoswatches.com
