You knew I couldn’t ignore this one, as an authenticated Patek Philippe Aquanaut fanboy. (Yes, I’m obvious.) Green is definitely the new blue, and this new Patek Philippe Aquanaut 5168G Khaki Green Jumbo White Gold watch is ~$40,000 of “cant touch this.” It’s important to say that Patek isn’t hopping on a bandwagon here, as this is the second green Aquanaut — there was a very-limited-edition steel, smaller-case 5167 version that came out back in 2011. At the end of the day, yes, it’s another sports watch from Patek that most people will never get to see in person, let alone get the chance to buy at retail. This gave me pause in deciding if it’s even worth it to cover as a news piece. It is, of course.
Patek chose the larger 5168 Aquanaut here, making for the “Jumbo” designation, which measures 42.2mm-wide and 8.25mm-thick. The dial and rubber strap are done in the khaki green colorway, but something that Patek always ignores becomes somewhat highlighted on this watch. What I’m referring to is the fact that Patek Philippe doesn’t really make date windows that match dial colors, and that contrast is in your face here.
Priced the same as last year’s orange-strapped Aquanaut Chronograph 5968A, this time-only watch uses the usual 324 S C movement, visible through the exhibition caseback. Though it’s a precious-metal watch, this is a sports watch that has 120 meters of water resistance.
Green is the color of the moment and also the color of money, which, alone, won’t be enough, even if you can afford the $39,690 USD price for this newest Patek Philippe Aquanaut. It makes me want to pull my hair out, but I can’t hide the green-eyed monster of jealousy that many of us will turn into when thinking about the lucky future owners of this piece. Even so, I can’t wait to try the watch on this week at Baselworld. Learn more over at patek.com
