Adding to their collection of understated, classically styled Artelier line of dress watches, Oris has announced the Artelier Calibre 111 with golden dial highlights. The new model keeps well within the design Oris has established with the Artelier 111 line but adds a new option with just a light touch of gold.

The Oris Artelier Calibre 111 with gold highlights features a stainless steel case, measuring in at a diameter of 43mm, with a lug width of 23mm to help balance out the case diameter. Oris is offering both a stainless steel bracelet, as well as a brown crocodile styled strap on a deployant clasp. Most notably, however, is what is powering the Artelier Calibre 111. As you might have guessed by the name, beating along inside this new model is Oris’ in-house 111 movement, a manually wound movement with 40 jewels, operating at 3Hz, with an ample power reserve of 240 hours (or 10 days).

This well-finished movement is visible through the sapphire display back. Highlighting this impressive 10-day life is a power reserve at the 3 o’clock position, which is balanced by a slightly-smaller sized sub-seconds dial at the 9 o’clock position. The dial features mostly gold plated baton-style hour indicators, with some cut off by the sub-dials. Then there are prominent gold-plated numerals at 12 and 6, with a strangely placed date display at the 9 o’clock position.

While I’m typically not a dress watch guy, I’ve always found Oris’ Artelier line to be a nicely designed, classically styled line of watches, with this new, gold-highlighted 111 being no exception. The balance of the steel case with the gold accents gives just enough of a warm gold aesthetic, without screaming “GOLD” to everyone that happens to notice your watch. Which is a good thing, because at 43mm, this watch might struggle to fit under your shirt cuff, attracting a bit more attention.

Oris has made some interesting design choices that sound a bit strange to me. But looking at the watch… it works. The choice to have asymmetrical subdials, and a date window at 9 o’clock are likely to turn some people off from the design, but in my opinion, Oris managed to balance these strange choices well – especially when paired with the leather strap. I’m a big bracelet fan, but the warmth of the gold pairs very well with the leather, and would be my choice were I to be picking one of these up.
