Based out of Hong Kong, OPIFEX is a new brand that hopes to deliver modern, high-luxury watch designs at affordable prices. The company was founded by a group of craftsmen and passionate watchmakers that have worked tirelessly to produce a timepiece that is both affordable and manufactured with a variety of in-house components. Now, after refining the design for over a year, they’re prepared to unveil their first timepiece, the OPIFEX Venture watch. With its unique skeletonized date disc and titanium construction, the watch offers something slightly different for those seeking a modern-looking watch. And, with about a month left on their Kickstarter campaign (almost 50% funded) it might be time to act fast if you’re interested.
With precision being their primary goal, OPIFEX set out to produce something with quality reminiscent of what can be found in the bigger brands. Of course, one of the best ways to do that is to incorporate a certain degree of hand-finishing and in-house production. That’s why each OPIFEX Venture features a skeleton date disc and hour wheel guard that’s produced in-house. The result is a complex and open look that is legible and unique to the brand.
The other focus for OPIFEX was comfort, which was achieved by using a fully titanium case. Since the watch comes in at 44mm, it was also important to balance the look of the watch on wrist without making it appear unwieldy. So, OPIFEX opted for a full black PVD coating that helps balance the larger size visually. Another interesting touch was the addition of modular, screwed-in lugs that support a clean transition with the strap. There is also the element of interchangeability and material combination, which is evident in the black PVD model with rose gold accents.
Looking at the dial, OPIFEX has managed to strike somewhat of a balance with the semi-skeletonized look while maintaining legibility. Perhaps the most prominent feature here is the set of sub-dials located at 12 and 6 o’clock. These indicate the power reserve and running seconds respectively and have a somewhat raised look compared to some of the other dial elements. Together with the hands, skeleton date disc display at 4 o’clock, and the large markers, the OPIFEX Venture delivers a three dimensional look that isn’t often found in watches at this price point. Plus, the hour and minute hands are coated with Super-LumiNova for low-light visibility.
Inside is the OPIFEX FE01M automatic movement. It beats at 21,600vph, has 22 jewels, delivers around 40 hours of power reserve, and performs within the range of -20/+40 seconds a day. Other features include a flat sapphire crystal and a comfortable canvas strap with a pin buckle clasp or an optional titanium bracelet.
The campaign for the OPIFEX Venture launched in late July and there are currently five available colorways; Navy, Flamingo,
Charcoal, Champagne, and Rose Gold. With a 12-month warranty, the Venture collection starts at around $465 USD. However, during the crowdfunding period, you can pre-order the OPIFEX Venture with super early bird pricing set at around $320 USD. Currently, delivery is scheduled for December 2017.
