NOMOS is known for its simple, effective designs and an aesthetic distinguished by a “form follows function” approach, with designs that are almost always pared down to the essentials. However, while the brand’s designs are simple, they are far from quotidian. NOMOS keeps things interesting with its clever dial layouts, interesting typefaces, and effective use of color. New for 2022, the NOMOS Club Campus Deep Pink and Club Campus Blue Purple — available in both 36 and 38.5mm — follow this premise while offering up a fresh new take on one of the brand’s classic timepieces.
NOMOS launched the Club Campus collection in 2017, intending to offer a watch that could serve as a relatively affordable, yet high-quality introduction to the world of mechanical timepieces. The line has a somewhat playful, whimsical feel to it, and the designs are marked by “California” dials that sport a mix of Roman numerals and Arabic numerals. The dial design is simple, yet effective, with raised indices and a slightly concave sub-seconds dial at 6 o’clock, which add subtle layers of visual depth to an otherwise straightforward layout.
Out of the two new colorways, the Club Campus Deep Pink is most definitely the more attention-grabbing variation. While many brands have experimented with vibrant colorways over the last couple of years, we have yet to see a dial in this shade of pink until now. The Deep Pink absolutely jumps off the wrist, with bright white contrasting indices and a neon orange second hand. And this watch is also versatile. While bright and vibrant, the Deep Pink pairs well with traditional hues such as navy blue, black, gray, and white, as well as contrasting colors such as green, red, and purple.
The new Club Campus Blue Purple is subtler and more nuanced than the Deep Pink variation. At first glance, it reads like a navy blue dial, but upon a closer look, one can detect hues of purple and gray. It’s also an interesting, versatile color, one that pairs well with earth tones. Also, thanks to its neon orange accents, it goes with a range of orange and yellow hues. True to the brand’s “form follows function” approach, the stark white indices contrast vividly with the background colors, making for dials that read very easily. Both new colorways also utilize Super-LumiNova luminescent material on their indices, which transforms to a bright blue in the dark, allowing for excellent low-light legibility.
The 36 and 38.5mm executions of this watch have a case thickness of 8.2 and 8.5mm, respectively, and wear quite well on the wrist, sliding easily under a shirt cuff. As one would expect, the 36mm is more classic in size, with a wrist presence that is somewhat reminiscent of a mid-century timepiece. The 38.5 has a more contemporary appeal and wears slightly larger than its diameter would indicate, thanks to a somewhat long lug-to-lug measurement of 48mm.
As its name might suggest, the Club Campus makes a fantastic coming-of-age gift for recent graduates and young professionals. Accordingly, each of the watches in this collection is fitted with a solid caseback, providing the perfect medium for a personal engraving. NOMOS offers free engravings up to 88 characters with the purchase of any timepiece in this collection.
Under the solid stainless steel caseback is NOMOS’ flagship movement, the manually wound Alpha Caliber. Designed and produced entirely in-house by NOMOS, the Alpha Caliber beats at 21,600 vibrations per hour and features a power reserve of approximately 43 hours. The Club Campus also boasts an ample water resistance rating of 100 meters, making it suitable for swimming.
Released just in time for graduation season, the new Club Campus variations are sure to make excellent gifts for new graduates. Priced at $1500 USD for the 36mm variations (references 711 and 713) and $1650 USD for the 38.5 mm variations (references 728 and 730), these pieces are available for order at the NOMOS website.
