Although the “color revolution” of the past several years may have slowed down somewhat in the second half of 2024, we’re still living through a more colorful and varied watch industry landscape than ever before. Among all the hues that have proliferated in the past several years of watchmaking, though, few can match the popularity and staying power of green. For its latest release, Frederique Constant adds to the enduring power of green with one of its most attractive and intriguing verdant offerings to date. The new limited-edition Frederique Constant Classic Worldtimer Manufacture in forest green adds a new facet to the brand’s already popular travel watch line, lending a sumptuously refined look to the series.
Available in either stainless steel or 18K rose gold, the new Frederique Constant Classic Worldtimer Manufacture shares its 42mm wide case with previous iterations. The overall form is clean and classical in images despite the larger dimensions, with a gently rounded case side profile, gently curving unchamfered lugs, and a rounded smooth bezel all accented by a fully polished finish. A prominent, broad-toothed onion crown completes the profile in photos, and the brand provides a sapphire display caseback (no caseback images were provided prior to press time). Naturally, this is a watch with few sporting pretensions, and its scant 50-meter water resistance rating confirms this.
Of course, the dial of the new Frederique Constant Classic Worldtimer Manufacture is what really separates it from its stablemates. The deep, mossy olive green tone Frederique Constant uses here gives the design a moody, old-school luxury feel in initial images, while also acting as a handsomely restrained backdrop for the brand’s layering and texture work. For example, the central main timekeeping dial floats above the surrounding 24-hour ring and the outer city ring, sporting an impressive variety of finishes including a finely detailed embossed world map, a deeply grained sunburst texture, and a crenelated edge. The 6 o’clock pointer date subdial takes this texturing even further, with a radial fluted guilloche pattern and further sunburst finishing for the date track. Outside of the new color, though, this is the familiar Classic Worldtimer Manufacturer layout, with crisp alpha hands, lumed circular hour indices, and a wide, easily legible outer city ring in black and white. Overall, it’s a layout that feels both traditional and handsomely modern in images, especially with the added warmth of the rose gold model.
As the name suggests, Frederique Constant powers the Classic Worldtimer Manufacture with an in-house powerplant. In this case, the brand turns to the FC-718 automatic world time movement. The FC-718 offers simple, straightforward adjustment, allowing users to set both the city ring and the date at the same crown position by rotating in opposite directions. In terms of performance, though, the movement feels a bit antiquated by modern standards. According to the brand, the FC-718 manages only a 38-hour power reserve at a 28,800 bph beat rate. To complete the package, Frederique Constant fits both variants of the watch with a deep forest green alligator leather strap, featuring white contrast stitching and a case-matching deployant clasp.
While the initial rush of green-hued timepieces may have slowed down from its peak several years ago, green remains a popular and versatile color in watchmaking, breathing new life into a variety of existing product lines. The new limited-edition Frederique Constant Classic Worldtimer Manufacture is a testament to the power of a good green dial, offering a newly refined, nuanced look to the long-standing collection. Only 718 examples of this watch will be made in stainless steel, with only 36 examples of the rose gold variant for a total of 754 units. Both versions of the green dial Frederique Constant Classic Worldtimer Manufacture are available now through authorized dealers. MSRP for the Frederique Constant Classic Worldtimer Manufacture in stainless steel stands at $4,695 USD as of press time, while the rose gold model is priced at $18,995 USD.
