This year’s Watches & Wonders 2024 witnessed Baume & Mercier’s expansion of the Hampton Collection, unveiling a new quartz monochrome black version. Dating back to 1994, the Hampton Collection pays homage to the 1920s Art Deco style. While Baume & Mercier has previously introduced automatic versions of the Hampton, this iteration embraces a high-accuracy quartz movement to achieve a sleeker, minimalist aesthetic. One common theme among Art Deco watches is the emphasis on the “design language from the golden ratio.” While initially understandable, it’s apparent that many draw inspiration from similar design elements. However, the Hampton Collection stands on its own by offering a compelling and more affordable alternative to other large Swiss-made rectangular watches.

The new Hampton adopts a minimalist design approach. Its polished stainless steel case measures a modest 35mm x 22.2mm and is 6.9mm thick. This smaller rectangular size ensures the watch seamlessly integrates with the wrist, while the quartz movement allows for a slimmer profile. A scratch-proof domed sapphire crystal safeguards the watch, accompanied by a solid case back that can be engraved upon request. The steel cabochon-shaped crown is adorned with a black agate stone, adding a touch of elegance, however reminiscent of another brand. With a water resistance of 5 ATM (50m), the watch promises wearability for every day. The sleek silhouette is further accentuated by the smooth-edged no-stitch black calfskin strap, which features quick-release functionality for easy interchangeability and is secured with a pin buckle. On Baume & Mercier’s website, you can search by model number for straps in tons of different colors. Being this is a clean, black dial, the color combinations are endless. It is to note, the straps available are stitched, so the minimalist look will change with the addition of a pop of color.

The monochrome black lacquered dial is adorned solely with the Baume & Mercier logo, their polished ruthenium Phi logo, and “Swiss Made,” exuding a clean and sophisticated appearance. The sweeping faceted rhodium-plated sword hour and minute hands elegantly traverse the dial, while the absence of a second hand enhances its refined aesthetic. You get to stare into the dark abyss of the lacquered dial while reading the time.

Powering the new Hampton is the quartz movement Valfleurier MHH057, offering an impressive 8 years of battery life. This longer battery life is a welcomed feature in modern quartz movements. Additionally, the enclosed case back provides ample space for personal engravings, making it an ideal choice for special occasions.

Square and rectangular watches are currently in vogue, and it’s no surprise to see new offerings from more affordable Swiss brands. While the size of the Hampton may be small, it would have been beneficial for Baume & Mercier to offer it in two sizes, considering they already produce a larger Hampton measuring 43mm x 27.5mm. Furthermore, expanding the range of no-stitch straps in various colors could maintain the minimalist aesthetic of this watch and other Hamptons in the collection. Nevertheless, the addition of the black monochrome lacquered dial to the Hampton family is a welcomed one. Priced at $1,650 USD, the new Hampton (M0A10760) makes its debut this month.
