We wanted to use this post speak to you, the readers and fellow watch-nerds, directly. On the 11th of January 2016, Moto Koure is launching the MK I, a watch inspired by the motoring era of the 1960s and 1970s. This watch will come in two variations – an automatic and a mecha-quartz. Instead of following suit with many other micro-brands and talking about “disrupting the watch world” or telling you about how we created a “timeless luxury watch,” we’d like to explain the concept behind our design and equip you with the knowledge to come to your own conclusions.

Our concept

The 1960s and 1970s were a defining time for the motoring world. Vehicles were incredibly multi-faceted and complex, perhaps more so than many vehicles of today. Cars such as – but of course not limited to – the Jaguar MK I gave birth to an entirely new class of vehicles, while retaining a very special blend of refinement and sportiness. Creating a watch that resembled this era was always going to be complex, because it needed to be a watch of contradictions. Contradictions that worked. It is these contradictions that gave birth to the bold and iconic designs of that era.

This is exactly what we had in mind when designing the Moto Koure MK I.

The dial on the automatic version features a wooden imprint, which was created with the intention of embodying the refined wooden dash style of vehicles from this era. The mecha-quartz watch comes in two variants. The first variant includes a bold pebbled leather texture, which is also an embodiment of a popular dash style of this era.

The second variant features a grittier design, which is underpinned by a diamond-plated texture.

The chronograph dials contradict the wooden and pebbled leather textures by injecting some racing flair into an otherwise refined dial. This is put together by racing-themed hands, brought to life by orange SuperLumiNova applied to both the hands and indices.

The multi-tiered case, which was designed with the intention of mimicking a front bumper, is another step towards refinement. This complements the wooden and pebbled leather textures, but is a refreshing contrast to the racing-themed diamond-plated texture.

The automatic version will come with a Seiko NE88 movement. This is a column wheel chronograph movement and was specifically selected to infuse modern technology with a vintage themed design. The mecha-quartz will be utilizing the Seiko VK series, which continues the theme of modern technology meeting vintage design.
