May the power of the Joker compel you! For 2018 Moscow, Russia-based independent watchmaker (and the current president of the AHCI) Konstantin Chaykin produced a one-of-a-kind version of his popular Joker watch with a jack-o-lantern pumpkin theme called the Konstantin Chaykin Joker Halloween. Even though just one of these “spooky” bronze-cased versions of our beloved “silly face luxury watch” is out there, I still thought the entertaining nature of this high-end piece of horology was worth sharing. Konstantin Chaykin himself has likely been asked to render the Joker watch dial in a series of ways and this is just one cute way of doing it. It certainly begs the question of what he will make next out of the Joker.

Konstantin Chaykin Joker Background & Context

For those not familiar with the Joker watch, the brilliance of the platform is that the “eyes” are the hour and minute indicator discs and the “tongue” is actually a moon phase indicator. This means two things. First is that you can display the time and moon phase in a manner that looks like a face. Second, as these indicators move, the expression of the face changes.

For the Joker Halloween, the typically round eyes are made into theme-appropriate triangle-shaped eyes. The face comes complete with a triangle nose as well as a mouth with saw-cut teeth. Best yet is the orange color of the face with the sunburst guilloche-style dial texture. The eyes, mouth, and nose are colored in yellow to suggest being back-lit with candlelight.

For this version of the Joker, Konstantin Chaykin decided to make the Halloween in bronze – which should age interestingly. The case is 42mm wide and 13.7mm thick. Over the dial is an AR-coated sapphire crystal. “Halloween” is also spelled around the entirety of the bezel.

The back of the case is steel and oddly enough, Konstantin Chaykin doesn’t mention the water resistance of the watch. I’ll take this opportunity to suggest that the world could benefit from a Diving Joker watch. Powering this Halloween pumpkin is what Konstantin Chaykin refers to as his caliber K07-0. That is a base Swiss ETA 2824-2 automatic movement with an in-house made module for the time eyes and mouth moon phase indicators. The module itself has 61 parts. The movement operates at 4Hz and with the module the power reserve is 38 hours.

Paired with the watch is a custom-made black alligator strap with an orange-colored inner lining and yellow piping along with bronze-colored stitching to match the case. It is a fun watch but not for everyone, of course. Actually, it only needs to appeal to the owner who got it. I have to admit that while I might not be jealous every day, on the day of Halloween itself there will be no other watch that I can think of which I would rather wear on my wrist.

This is a really fun product and unfortunately, it needs to be both really exclusive and luxury-priced. With that said, I think the “face watch” market is just about to experience a golden age as other brands follow suit. Konstantin Chaykin will be able to credit himself as a trendsetter.
