Most of you by now are familiar with JeanRichard’s masculine and rugged looking sport watches such as the Terrascope or Aquascope. Those are pretty cool watches, but JeanRichard is also known for a softer side of more classically styled traditional watches. Currently, most of those exist in the 1681 collection.
1681 watches come in round or cushion-style cases as seen here in the 1681 Small Second timepiece. It is actually the same size as the sportier Terracope or Aquascope ranges at a hefty 44mm wide. So if you prefer the sizable diameter of those pieces but want something a bit more dressy in style, something like the 1681 might be a good option. It is also worth noting that the 1681 has an in-house made movement.
Exisiting under the Girard-Perregaux brand, JeanRichard refreshed itself over the past few years coming down in price a bit thanks to using ETA, versus all in-house made movements. That doesn’t mean that all JeanRichard watches have abandoned the JR1000 caliber collection of movements, which populated most of its timepieces.
This particular 1681 Small Second model contains the caliber JR1090, which is the version of the JR100- with the subsidiary seconds dial at 9 o’clock. The movement is an automatic, and has a power reserve of 48 hours operating at 4Hz. On the dial you also have a date indicator window. Of course my favorite part of the face is the properly sized blued-steel leaf-style hands (that have SuperLumiNova applied inside). The dial is laquered white with crisp minute markers and applied gold hour markers.
This particular version of the JeanRichard 1681 Small Second watch has the solid 18k rose gold cushion-shaped case (ref. 60330-52-132-BBBB). The same piece can be bought with a steel case and gold bezel (ref. 60320-56-152-BBB0) or a full steel case (ref 60330-11-131-HDPO). JeanRichard even offers a few strap options including mahogany, chocolate, or black alligator. Similarly to something like a Panerai watch, many enthusiasts feel that this particular case style happens to look good with many strap choices, so buyers are encouraged to swap it up.
With an in-house made movement and classic style, the 1681 Small Second collection is a reminder of the brand’s past, but firmly connected to its present collection. It makes for a bold wearing, but conservative watch. I like to think of it as a really big dude wearing a three-piece suit. Prices for the watch from steel, two-tone, to all gold are; $6,400, $8,800, and $21,400. jeanrichard.com
