Aside from the different materials, the 18k white gold and red gold versions have hands that match the case color. While I like the 18k red gold case I prefer the dial with blued-steel hands on the 18k white gold models. The dials are Grand Feu enamel and have two levels, with the inner part of the subsidiary seconds dial being recessed where the date scale ring is. A hint of red for the 31st day of the month indicator in the center of the dial adds a touch of color and is right out of the text book of modern watch design.

The rounded edges of the sapphire crystal over the dial allow for a thin bezel but keeps a slightly high profile for the case. I think at 2-3mm thinner, the Grande Seconde Quantieme might be very interesting as a “thin watch.” In fact, I believe it is only a matter of time before Jaquet Droz releases a Grande Seconde Ultra-Thin watch collection.

It is actually easy to dream up interesting complications for the Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde line of watches. The Quantieme took the bold step of adding the date and there is of course also a tourbillon version. I must say that there is something major to say about the elegance of the time-only models. Then again, who is to say that subdial for the seconds wouldn’t also look great as a world time indicator?

Jaquet Droz is certainly winning in the category of “different looking beautiful watches,” and the Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde Quantieme is just the top of the iceberg. There is a lot more to discover from the brand and their goal is simply to communicate their diverse set of interesting values with watch lovers.
