The Jazzmaster collection has long been a Hamilton mainstay, occupying the more contemporary and modern corner of the brand’s extensive catalog. Most Jazzmaster watches are easily identifiable by their sharp and refined styling, oftentimes with a slightly dressier bent. Cue the music: Introducing the Jazzmaster Performer, a refreshing new sub-collection that takes the classic elegance of the Jazzmaster formula and moves it in a decidedly sporty direction. While available as a three-hander in both 38mm and 34mm case sizes, it’s the 42mm-wide Hamilton Jazzmaster Performer Automatic Chronograph that most embodies a sophisticated harmony of style and performance.
It’s a delicate balancing act to create a sports watch that leans into its namesake while still maintaining an air of chic, and the Hamilton Jazzmaster Performer Automatic Chronograph manages to do exactly that. The blue-dialed version is one of four total references available in the Jazzmaster Performer chronograph collection, and each features a classic three-register chronograph layout with a 30-minute subdial at 3 o’clock, a 12-hour subdial at 6 o’clock, and a running seconds subdial at 12 o’clock. A date window sits at 4:30, nestled between polished applied hour indices that run along the edge of the 60-second marker chapter ring. A deep blue sunray finish emanates from the center of the dial, accented by the silver borders surrounding the matching blue-snailed chronograph subdials.
Legibility is exceptionally high, thanks to the neatly polished dauphine handset that rounds out the dial design and sits inside a comfortably proportioned 42mm stainless steel case with sharply angled lugs that conform easily to the wrist. A tachymeter bezel sits atop the case, and on the side is a signed Hamilton crown, as well as what one might easily mistake for crown guards. But closer inspection reveals a pair of elliptic chronograph pushers, an understated detail that gives the watch a splash of Jazzmaster Performer personality.
Inside the watch is Hamilton’s H-31 automatic chronograph movement with an anti-magnetic Nivachron™ balance spring. Operating at 28,800 bph (4Hz), the movement features hacking seconds and is fully visible through the exhibition caseback. Thanks to the 60-hour power reserve, the watch is ready-made for a weekend of adventures, while the design is sophisticated enough for a dressier night out on the town.
With a case thickness of 15.22mm, the Hamilton Jazzmaster Performer Automatic Chronograph cuts a bold profile, but not at the expense of wearability, as the overall case construction of the watch provides for a very balanced experience on the wrist. The matching blue perforated leather strap with a signed folding clasp is another subtle nod to the watch’s sporty aspirations, and much like the rest of its design elements, it is executed with tasteful restraint.
The Hamilton Jazzmaster Performer Automatic Chronograph offers an appealing alternative for anyone looking for a durable stainless steel sports watch with the elegance that the Hamilton Jazzmaster collection has long been known for. Pricing for the blue-dialed reference H36616640 as shown is $2,195 USD, and it is available for pre-order now. For more information, visit Hamilton’s website.
