Avant-garde luxury watchmaker HYT is back with another stunning timepiece that sees it return to its roots after a surprising but no less impressive release earlier this year. Continuing its resurgence as a cutting-edge watchmaker, the brand has just announced its newest limited edition, the S1 Titanium “Japan Limited Edition.” This watch not only returns the brand to putting its mechanics on display but also continues the brand’s challenge of conventions by establishing a new model line with the S1.

The new S1 “Japan Limited Edition” builds on the bold, angular beauty of the T1 introduced earlier this year. The case is made from silver and black-coated grade 5 titanium and features exceptional finishing along the edges and facets in a blend of polished and satin surfaces that bring it to life. The case’s ergonomic design belies its 45.3mm diameter, 46.3mm lug-to-lug, and 17.2mm thickness, with the wearability further enhanced by the fitted Galaxy Tec silver Velcro strap that creates a seamless silhouette around the wrist. The impressive case is further enhanced with a sapphire crystal and a titanium crown at 2 o’clock protected by an attached crown guard. Water resistance has been set at 50m to provide utility throughout the day. In addition to the Galaxy Tec strap, the watch will come with a more restrained black rubber strap, and both will feature titanium buckles to match the case. Further, the straps can be quickly changed thanks to an ingenious quick-release mechanism operated with a single button.

While the previously released T1 models were among the first HYT’s with solid dials, the S1 Japan Edition returns to the brand’s hallmark openworked dials that put the complex movement on full display. Creating an immediately unique look, the micro-honeycomb flange hosts the black DLC-plated appliques of the hour markers, the curve of which is traced by HYT’s signature fluidic retrograde hours indicator. This novel display uses black liquid inside of a borosilicate capillary tube to track the hours; the tube fills as the hour passes, then empties at the top of each new hour. The time is further shown with a large satin-finished black gold minute hand-painted with Super-LumiNova for all-day legibility. The hour hand follows a floating minute ring with white numerals and markings. Above the ring at 2 o’clock is a retrograde power reserve indicator with lumed hand, while at 9 o’clock the dial offers a running seconds display with a lumed hand, bringing additional functionality beyond the T1 models.

Of course, through both the dial and the sapphire caseback, the magnificent HYT caliber 501-CM is ready to be admired. The most captivating component of any HYT, the 352-piece in-house movement stands out from typical mechanical movements with its twin-bellow design. The bellows are made of an allow and have walls just one-quarter the thickness of a human hair yet 10,000 times more watertight than most dive watches. The bellows contain reservoirs with the black fluid running through the hour tube, as well as the clear fluid you don’t see. Driven by the movement, the first reservoir compresses while the other expands, causing the liquids to move within the tube at a controlled rate; after 12 hours, the black fluid recedes and the process starts again. With fine sandblasting and satin finishing, the engaging hand-wound movement delivers 72 hours of power at 28,800 vph, allowing the watch to easily fit into a collector’s rotation.

Delivering the ingenuity and marvel for which HYT has always been known, the new HYT S1 “Japan Limited Edition” reestablishes a hydromechanical hallmark with an open-worked dial. Building on the T1, the S1 is the second step in creating a cohesive catalog of high-end, unique timepieces that cut no corners and push the envelope with a balance of technical modernity and aesthetic beauty. The HYT S1 Titanium “Japan Limited Edition” (Reference H03300-A) is priced at $65,500 USD (excluding tax) and is limited to eight pieces and available exclusively in Japan.
