Despite the Porsche 911’s near-synonymousness with circuit racing glory, the long-running sports car’s first-ever major motorsports entry actually came via a very different style of motorsports: rallying. The 1965 Monte Carlo Rally saw the first Porsche 911 ever entered in international competition – and the birth of a racing legacy that continues to this day. TAG Heuer (née simply Heuer at the time) was part of this first-ever 911 race entry as a dashboard timer supplier. As part of its LVMH Watch Week 2025 novelties, TAG Heuer celebrates 60 years of racing partnership between the brand and the Porsche 911 by revisiting 2023’s Carrera Chronosprint x Porsche with warm new colorways, a host of commemorative touches, and the same show-stopping accelerating/decelerating chronograph seconds display. The new limited edition TAG Heuer Carrera Chronosprint x Porsche Rallye is a love letter to six decades of 911 racing excellence, with enough exquisite finishing and in-house horological spectacle to entice non-car enthusiasts as well.

The TAG Heuer Carrera Chronosprint x Porsche Rallye begins with the brand’s 42mm wide “Glassbox” case. Available in either stainless steel or 18K 3N yellow gold, this silhouette has become the de facto face of the Carrera line in recent years, and remains a handsome blend of classic and modern influences. As always, the spectacular, bezel-less domed sapphire crystal remains the focal point on the wrist, lending a sense of Jetsons-esque retro-futurism to an otherwise rather standard Carrera silhouette. The Carrera’s definitive inwardly-beveled lugs return here as well, lending broad, mirror-polished facets to the design for a bright and luxurious feel during wear. TAG Heuer breaks up these polished surfaces with simple horizontally brushed case sides, as well as the line’s broad pump-style pushers. Around back, TAG Heuer completes the look with a sapphire display caseback and rates the watch for a respectable 100 meters of water resistance.

Although much of the presentation is carried over from the previous Carrera Chronosprint x Porsche, the dial is where the TAG Heuer Carrera Chronosprint x Porsche Rallye truly comes into its own. There’s an extremely subtle aventurine effect to the main gloss black dial surface, adding a touch of mysterious sparkle to the proceedings, but the real highlights are the classic Porsche-inspired graphical touches throughout. Beyond the obvious Porsche branding on the outer edge of the watch’s signature double-sided chapter ring, there are multiple elements here taken directly from the VDO gauge cluster on early Porsche 911 dashboards. As a start, the 6 o’clock running seconds subdial is almost fully VDO-inspired, with both the typeface and the needle-style red hand lifted directly from period gauges. The striated red segment between 50 and 55 seconds is lifted directly from period Porsche tachometers, adding a sporty “redline” look to proceedings. The matching red stripe extending to nearly 4 o’clock on the outer scale is an even deeper piece of Porsche storytelling. Thanks to the unique accelerating/decelerating central chronograph seconds hand, this red section covers the first 8.4 seconds of chronograph activation — the same amount of time that the Porsche 911 entered in the 1965 Monte Carlo Rally took to accelerate from 0-100 kilometers per hour. Not only is it a brilliantly esoteric link to the first-ever Porsche 911 in international motorsports, it’s a vivid, retro-styled statement piece that adds further character to an already distinctive chronograph design. Amid the modern Carrera’s familiar mix of gently curving applied indices and pointed baton hands, the Porsche Rallye also adds a set of warm khaki dial text and lume. Rather than visually reading as faux patina, though, this simply adds a warmer, more sumptuous touch to what already stands as a clear blend of vintage and modern influences.

As with previous iterations, TAG Heuer powers the Carrera Chronosprint x Porsche Rallye with its in-house TH20-08 automatic chronograph movement. Although largely similar to the standard TH20 that powers many of TAG Heuer’s high-end chronograph offerings, the TH20-08 adds a pair of snail-shaped chronograph wheels, allowing for the watch’s signature chronograph seconds action. For the first 15 seconds of each minute, the TH20-08’s central chronograph seconds hand moves at roughly double normal speed, carrying it all the way to just before the 6 o’clock index before slowing down to normal pace for the next 15 seconds. For the second half of each minute, the central seconds hand slows down to half pace, covering the distance between 9 o’clock and 12 o’clock over a full 30 seconds. It’s a specialized, bespoke complication dedicated to accurately tracking shorter intervals, but in practice it can make chronograph reading downright confusing until one acclimates to it. With that said, it’s an undeniable conversation-starter, captivating enthusiasts and non-enthusiasts alike when started up. Outside of its signature addition, the TH20-08 offers the same excellent performance as its counterparts, including a massive 80-hour power reserve and a 28,800 bph beat rate with a column wheel and vertical clutch chronograph actuation system. Chronograph operation is sharp and firm, with a commendably precise feel. In terms of finishing, the TH20-08 follows the brand’s modern formula, with nearly complete upper bridges topped with Côtes de Genève and accented by skeleton cutouts for the balance wheel, select gear train elements, and the column wheel. The rotor uses the 911 steering wheel-inspired skeleton layout shared across all Porsche-themed models, with an attractive mix of radial brushing, matte blasting, and layered construction.

To complete the watch TAG Heuer fits the Carrera Chronosprint x Porsche Rallye with a pair of strap options. Stainless steel examples use a sporty, modernist H-link bracelet, defined by sharp, angular presentation. Diminutive, faceted polished center links and polished link sides add some brightness to a predominantly brushed layout, and overall construction feels weighty and rock-solid on the wrist. For 18K gold models, TAG Heuer instead uses a classic perforated black leather rally strap, topped with beige contrast stitching and a yellow gold pin buckle.
