Gruman Watches is a new brand with operations spanning between Switzerland and The Netherlands. Their flagship debut model is called “Sputnik” (means “Satellite” in Russian), a highly engineered, reliable, and affordable GMT watch with a cool hybrid design based on aviation-diver themes. Finding an affordable Swiss Made watch with an automatic GMT movement can be quite a challenge, but Gruman has managed to strike a fine balance that delivers quality and functionality thanks to the heavily decorated Elaboré-grade Sellita SW330-1 beating within. To top it off, Gruman also offers a selection of dial color options to choose from.
At first glance, the Gruman Sputnik GMT watch may seem oversized but the dimensions tell a different story. At 44mm in diameter with a lug-to-lug distance of 50mm, the watch manages to provide comfortable wrist presence without seeming unwieldy. The cushion shaped 316L stainless steel case keeps things compact with optimal room to display all the functions and timekeeping information. The case features two crowns, the lower one for time and date setting, and the upper one for the rotatable inner bezel (“reflector”).
The dial is the center of this concept. It has a delicate, shiny satin finish with vertical brushing that is subtle and easy on the eyes. It also provides a nice backdrop for the multidimensional construction, inspired by the bolted metal plates of a satellite’s fuselage (thus the name, Sputnik). The texture is not printed, as the price would suggest, but rather built as a fully textured 3 dimensional construction using engraved lines and brass embossed dots. All of this still makes for a legible watch by day, and at night, the hands and applied indexes feature 3 layers of Super-LumiNova C3.
Another noteworthy trait is the world cities outer bezel, made with a sandblasted PVD’d steel base and ceramic insert. The satellite texture being quite discreet, this bezel is probably the most eye-catching element of the watch. It brings a fantastic visual pop and is a very satisfying pattern to look at and follow with the eyes. Additionally, the watch has a sapphire crystal with double internal AR-coating and a sapphire display caseback. Water resistance is rated at 200m.
Considering the movement as the heart of a watch, Gruman opted for the trusted Elaboré-grade Sellita SW330-1 automatic GMT movement. It features 42 hours of power reserve and operates at 4Hz. The movements will be heavily decorated (perlage, ruthenium rotor, and radiales Côtes de Genève) and the logo will be engraved/gold color filled.
The watch will have a pilot style genuine leather strap and buckle engraved with the brand name. An optional extra is available for a fully machined custom steel bracelet with satellite-shaped center links, alternating polished and vertically brushed links, with a CNC machined buckle plus plenty of micro adjustments.
Currently Gruman is offering the Sputnik GMT at a special pre-order price of $590. For those seeking a more budget-friendly option, Gruman also offers the Sputnik 3hands at a pre-order price of $390. It features the same solid design and construction with a three-hand movement (modified Elaboré-grade Sellita SW200-1) and a 12-hour rotating bezel for secondary timezone tracking.
