Two hundred. That’s the number of prototypes destroyed by Casio engineer and G-Shock inventor Kikuo Ibe in pursuit of the ultimate sports watch back in the early 1980s. Some 35 years later, the brand has arrived at its most state-of-the-art tool watch ever: the Mudmaster GWG2000 series, the brand’s most rugged field watch yet, and a purpose-built tool for taming the planet’s harshest on-land environments.

Two years after Ibe’s pioneering G-Shock made its triumphant debut, the brand’s flagship “Master of G” series was introduced in 1985. Built around G-Shock’s signature square case, the “Master” reference featured a new, more compliant bezel design that slipped over the oversized buttons, creating an additional layer of weather resistance and giving birth to the original ref. DW5500C, nicknamed “Mudman.”

That original Mudman from 1985 lay the foundation for all the Master of G watches to follow, a collection that would house all of the brand’s latest technologies while delivering best-in-class capability and functionality across land, sea, and air.

Now called the Mudmaster, the newest flagship ana-digital G-Shock GWG2000 retains the spirit of shock, dust, and water resistance of that original Master of G reference, but it does so in a hybrid, state-of-the-art fashion, with a multi-function Triple Sensor module (Barometer, Compass, Thermometer), forged carbon components in the case and bezel for lightness and increased impact resistance, specially engineered buttons for complete weather sealing, and even solar-charged multi-band timekeeping with mobile app control for unparalleled accuracy and autonomy anywhere on earth.

And not only is the new GWG2000 G-Shock’s most capable Mudmaster ever built, it’s also the most comfortable Mudmaster as well, thanks to a newly engineered case design whose silhouette is both smaller and slimmer across the wrist while retaining all of the Mudmaster’s legendary bulletproof capability.

The end result is an ultra-modern, super-capable tool watch uniquely tailored for the harshest on-land environments that Mother Nature can dream up.

Nestled between the coastal city of Monterey and the vast, moody expanse of Big Sur, the Carmel Highlands are part of California’s fertile Central Coast, which enjoy a very Mediterranean climate year-round — one that’s hot and tinder-dry in the summer, and cool and very wet in the winter. The rugged, remote edges of the Highland ranches and their dense web of trails make for the perfect proving ground for a purpose-built tool watch like the Mudmaster, as it’s here that hard work and unpredictable, inclement conditions can be found year-round, lying in wait beneath dense canopies of cypress, oak, and mossy redwood.

G-Shock was able to achieve a considerably more wearable Mudmaster thanks to the use of carbon parts, which are thinner, lighter, and stronger than those it replaces, yielding a watch that weighs a scant 106 grams. Measuring 54mm-wide by 16mm-thick, the GWG2000 is also smaller than the outgoing ref. GWG1000. Shielding the dial from the elements is a highly scratch-resistant sapphire crystal. And though it might be a field watch, in keeping with the G-Shock collection traditions, the Mudmaster is water resistant to 200 meters. Even its ultra-grippy knurled pushers are designed to be fully functional in muddy environments. In addition to a new level of performance, Casio engineered the modern generation GWG2000 Mudmaster watches with an enhanced sense of style and visual excellence for its class-leading tool watch.

Inside the Mudmaster GWG2000 watches are Casio-engineered timekeeping modules that include an array of sensors. The combination analog/digital dial also allows light to pass through to a photovoltaic cell that powers the battery of this “Tough Solar” system. Casio also includes an antenna for picking up signals from atomic clock radio frequencies, as well as a barometer, compass, and a thermometer — all foundational features of highly capable outdoor watches. A bright “caution yellow” indicator at 10 o’clock lets the wearer know which function of the watch is currently being utilized.

Easily activated even with gloved hands by an oversized knurled pusher at 6 o’clock, double LED lights on the dial help illuminate the face in all lighting conditions. Even the ergonomic resin strap is reinforced with extra-durable alloy rods to ensure they do not detach from the case even if subject to many extreme forces.

Overbuilt to the nth degree, the GWG2000 is G-Shock’s

most advanced Mudmaster ever, and the ultimate

tool watch for the toughest jobs on earth.
