If serious retro is your jam, then the reissued Fossil Hologram watch will probably pique your interest. As much as I struggled to digest this release, I’m still, despite being mired in the middle of my thirties, weirdly entranced by holograms. Whether that means I want one on my wrist to distract me from paying attention to the road while driving or the world around me, in general, I don’t know. But there’s a certain throwback fondness I can’t shake, even though it goes against every sensible fiber of my being.

While the Fossil Hologram is not going to rock horology’s foundations, it is a bit of fun that nods to an era in which Fossil played a significant role in the revitalization of the watch industry with fun, funky, and fashionable releases like this one.
The Fossil Hologram watch comes in a limited-edition Archival Series tin, as an homage to the packaging for which Fossil became renowned. This latest rash of nostalgic releases aims to tap into the child within. This particular relaunch takes a design from the early ’90s and reimagines it with modern sizing and manufacturing techniques.
The hologram itself, which is basically the beginning and end of this design, is pretty cool. Where it sits in the collection of a serious watch-lover, I don’t know, but it certainly has a place on the wrist of the younger, newer fan of the industry. In the same way that the Swatches and Fossils of the ’80s inspired many of us to collect and learn about watches, so too can these faithful reinterpretations bring on board a new generation.
The hologram flips between two different travel-inspired images when you move your wrist, shifting from the image of a motorbike to text reading ‘The Open Road.” It’s a quaint message of freedom that is likely to appeal to a younger audience looking to make a statement based on style rather than status. At $115 this limited reissue is available exclusively from Fossil online and in Fossil boutiques. Learn more at fossil.com.
