The MR-G collection from Casio sits at the pinnacle of the G-SHOCK family. The MR-G tier is committed to not just the most advanced timekeeping technology, but also an elevated watchmaking craft that frequently sees Casio partner with Japanese artisans to imbue MR-G watches with traditional artistry. The latest entry into this esteemed stratum of G-SHOCKs is the Casio G-SHOCK MRGB2000JS Jyuryoku-Maru: San, a stunning analog timepiece that enlists two master artisans in its design and construction and takes inspiration from a commissioned G-SHOCK katana, the namesake Jyuryoku-Maru: San.
The MR-G Jyuryoku-Maru: San watch embodies its last word, San, which translates to “brilliant.” The shine of the katana’s blade and the shell-studded scabbard are fully realized in this execution. The bezel is made of recrystallized titanium, calling to mind the distinctive edge pattern that master swordsmith Kamiyama Teruhira forged for the Jyuryoku-Maru: San katana. By recrystallizing layers of pure and Ti64 titanium, the blade’s unique appearance is recreated and finished with a deep-layer hardening that enhances its durability. With just the variation of the bezel, each iteration of the timepiece becomes completely unique.
The mid-case is no less impressive, with arc ion plating applied to the pure titanium to bring out a blue hue that mirrors the tonality of the Jyuryoku-Maru: San’s metal. Combined with the arc DLC, the watch provides exceptional resistance to scratches and wear. The watch measures 49.8mm in diameter and 16.9mm thick, with a lug-to-lug of 54.7mm, and features 200m water resistance, a sapphire crystal, and rose gold-tone accents.
For the bracelet, Casio looked to artist Nomura Mamoru. The iridescent center links on the band feature aogai-nuri blue shell lacquer designed by Mamoru. Aogai-nuri references the mother-of-pearl inlay often used in Japanese scabbards and appears on the namesake katana’s scabbard. Here, it is achieved with a process developed specifically for the timepiece and is complemented by DAT55G titanium outer links. The bracelet is completed with a locking folding clasp, also crafted from DAT55G titanium. Completing the watch’s impressive build, the caseback is hand-etched with 燦 (San) character, reinforcing the craft and care with which each piece has been created.
Of course, stunning artistic design is just part of what makes MR-G what it is. The other part is the advanced technology that powers the watches. On the MRGB2000JS, that is delivered by the 5625 module, which offers Bluetooth connectivity (via the Casio Watches App), radio-controlled timekeeping, a dual time zone display with home city time-world time swapping and daylight savings settings, a stopwatch, countdown timer, multi-function alarm, LED light, automatic hand alignment correction, and a fully automatic calendar. All of these functions are accessible through the crown and pushers and displayed with excellent legibility on the analog dial, which features a unique texture that evokes the cuts and edges of a katana.
Beautifully capturing both the craftsmanship of two Japanese artists and the cutting-edge technology and durability of the MR-G collection, the Jyuryoku-Maru: San G-SHOCK arrives at the pinnacle of watchmaking and watch design. The watch’s outstanding modern functionality and traditional artisan work provide a unique and unrivaled balance of Japanese ingenuity, in a singular katana-inspired timepiece built to stand the test of time. The Casio G-SHOCK MRGB2000JS Jyuryoku-Maru: San watch is priced at $8,000 USD and is limited to 800 pieces worldwide. For more information, please visit the G-SHOCK website.
