Based out of San Francisco, Codek Watches was born out of a passion for mechanical watches. The Codek Spiral has a unique design for ardent watch enthusiasts seeking something different to add to their collection. Aptly named after the French word for hairspring, the Spiral takes inspiration from the inner workings of mechanical timepieces.
Within the dial, the embossed waves are a treat for the eyes under different lighting; at times they blend into the background and at other times they are highlighted. This represents the motion and amplitude of the escapement. The hairspring is the heart and soul of every mechanical watch, expanding and contracting as it “breathes.” Such rhythm is represented in the gradient arc formed from 9 to 3 o’ clock and vice versa. This arc results in a unique dial design where the hour indices do not conform to one standard length.
The 316L stainless steel case has a width of 38mm and a lug-to-lug width of 41mm. The two “corners” on the case are meant to evoke a balance wheel with three spokes. The case does not follow the formulaic circular design with angled lugs. It’s eye-catching and unique, yet it maintains beautiful proportions.
The movement of the Spiral is a modified ETA 2824-2 automatic. The modified movement was formed in partnership with Codek’s manufacturing partner, who has over 150 years of watchmaking experience with a history of manufacturing watches for other brands such as Christopher Ward. The crown stem is modified to have one stop, thereby eliminating the annoyance of a secondary date position on the crown. Each movement is regulated in 3 positions to strict accuracy standards to ensure a deviance well under -3/+6 seconds per day. In Take Time’s review of the Spiral, Patrick experienced a change of -2 seconds over the course of one week.
Each Spiral is paired with a leather strap. There are two choices of leather, Horween Shell Cordovan and Italian veg-tanned calf. Each strap is handmade in the USA and features quick-release pins for easy strap changes. The dial comes in two variants: Midnight Blue (limited to 200 pieces), and Opaline White (limited to 100 pieces). The contrasting light and dark colors make the watch extremely legible, while the painted seconds tip adds a pop of color.
