CJR Watches is a new name in the watch industry that seeks to defy convention by favoring bold designs and unique concepts. The brand was founded by Calvin Ng who had a vision to create watches that exemplified speed, thrill, and luxury that were also affordable and high-quality. CJR Watches has demonstrated this approach in two previous watches- Velocita and Airspeed. We are now ready to introduce our newest timepiece, the CJR Commander Series.
About the Watch
The aesthetic of this watch is unlike most watches on the market, but does draw parallels with existing brands. Where the rounded case and glass are concerned, Ikepod is a brand that definitely inspired us. Furthermore, the Commander Series’ internals were influenced by Seven-Friday. We had a clear intention to show off the mechanical side of this watch as the face showcases several moving parts. We used a curved glass screen to mimic the glass of an airplane’s cockpit and to offset some of the more rugged features of the watch.
The Commander Series comes in a variety of eye-catching color blends, each designed to appeal to different demographics. The style of the watch even carries over to the straps, which feature colored stitching.
Case
Using curved glass proved to be a challenge since it needed to blend seamlessly with the 45mm watch case while also being sturdy and strong. We went through different iterations of glass until we found the quality we had been searching for. Having a beautiful watch is not enough for us at CJR – we want our timepieces to stand the test of time.
We made the decision to add glass to the back of the watch as well. Our intention was to allow the wearer to see the intricate mechanics within the watch while also being able to show off a stylish feature that most other watches simply do not include. Indeed, the back is as much of a showpiece as the front, and though it is hidden most of the time, CJR has gone the extra mile to ensure that it is still an impressive feature. Many watchmakers intend for the back of their timepieces to serve as protection, but we have opted for style on this front instead.
Listening to our supporters is something we take very seriously at CJR. This is why the Commander Series’ new back glass panel is now user-serviceable. Our previous model, Airspeed, lacked this function which caused some supporters to recommend a redesign on this front. For further convenience, the side of the case features an easily graspable crown that allows for the precise adjustment of the time.
Dial and Hands
We wanted the Commander’s dial to represent a journey of discovery. Reading the time is simple enough thanks to very clear hands with tips that are accented in a different color for extra clarity. Keeping with our theme of bold design, we chose to replace the traditional second hand of the Commander Series watch with a miniature second wheel. It was our intention to pay homage to the aviation industry with this special feature while also having it work as a functional piece of the watch. A 24-hour indicator is also present as a non-intrusive second way to quickly gauge the time for travelers and frequent fliers.
The upper and lower section of the dial contains two rugged metal mesh pieces. Beneath this, there are several more intricate layers, each one containing tiny moving parts integral to the functionality of the watch. Furthermore, telling the time at night will not be an issue. Each hand glows in the dark along with each of the watch’s hour indicators. At night, the watch face illuminates beautifully and looks like part of the instrument panel on a jet fighter.
Movement
This watch is as much about the hidden details as it is about what the wearer can see. In terms of quality nothing has been sacrificed, especially when it comes to ensuring that the CJR Commander is an accurate machine. Like most micro-brands, we at CJR have opted to use a Japanese movement, which not only looks beautiful, but ensures continuous accuracy. This Miyota 82S7 movement is a skeleton movement featuring 21 jewels.
This type of skeleton movement has two main advantages over other watch movements. Firstly, and purely aesthetically, the movement looks stunning. The skeleton movement used allows the internals to remain visible and shows the balance and harmony between movement and watch. Also, in certain areas, you can see right through the watch, which we believe is quite special. The second advantage of using this particular skeleton movement is the 48-hour power reserve.
Colors and Comfort
The Commander Series will be coming out in five striking shades of color, each designed to suit a different taste and palate. These five unique colors are Sunset Bronze, Jetstream Blue, Storm Grey, Frost White, and Molten Red. Each watch has splashes of their respective colors on the hands, dial, and even the straps. This ensures that the watch’s personality does not just end with the face. While we would have liked to have added a few more colors, we felt that the ones selected would appeal best to our customer base.
In terms of comfort, we made sure the leather straps would not cause chafing or irritation and come with plenty of adjustment holes to fit multiple wrist sizes.
We set out to create a watch that would be a tribute to the aviation industry while remaining stylish and appealing to a wide audience. We have tried to balance rugged looks, aerodynamic form, and moving mechanical parts to create a unique timepiece. This, we hope, creates a watch that feels bold and daring.
We have taken into consideration the comments and feedback from our previous supporters and have made a watch that we are proud of. We kept our backers in mind all the way with this particular watch build and we hope that our hard work can be seen in the CJR Commander Series.
Once again, we would like to thank everyone who has shown interest and supported us with the Commander Series. If this is the first time you have heard of CJR or the Commander Series, visit our live Kickstarter page here where the current “Super Early Bird” pricing is at $449.
