Breitlings are a bit mainstream for my tastes normally, but once in a while they release something that I notice and keeps my attention. Breitling needs no introduction from me. We all know of this very popular (and rightly so) maker of fine watches for all activities. One thing I appreciate about Breitling is that no matter how “glitzy” their watch may get, they also stay true to being a well thought out instrument.
The Breitling Superocean line has been around for a while. Over 50 years in fact, in various iterations. However, most of the recent models have been a bit boring for my tastes. Yes, they make excellent diving watches, but I need a little more style on my wrist. Well, I was quite delighted to see Breitling’s Superocean Heritage line released. The watches look great, with clean classic lines that are as functional as they are symmetric. Best of all, don’t confuse the “Heritage” nominer as any indication that these watches are not modern in everyday. The only thing “old” about these watches is the minimalist look of the face, and the optional metal bracelet. The are done in a retro style, but in terms of function and a size, there are modern watches all around. Size wise, the Superocean Heritage comes in three sizes, from 38mm to a large 46mm. Of course the 46mm is my favorite, and actually “wears” smaller than its size would lead you to believe. The Smaller 38mm version has a very nice subsidiary seconds dial that I would love to see on the larger models.
The Breiting Superocean Heritage has function in mind as well as style. It is a classic diver’s watch through and through. Typical features include an easy to grip rotating bezel for time measurements, as well as a depth rating of 200 meters. 100 meters is about as deep as any free swimming diver can reach. Like many Breiting models, the Superocean Heritage is a certified Chronometer, and will please users with its accuracy.
Images of this Breiting really do not do it justice. You have to wear it to appreciate the absolute ease of legibility and how well it compliments most any attire. When looking at this watch, you have to understand part of it is Breiting’s attempt to create a handsome diving watch unique from the gold standard which is the Rolex Submariner. While the Rolex is handsome watch by all measures, the Breiting arguably takes a more masculine approach with this diving watch from the company that specializes in dead-on reliability for pilots, drivers, and anyone else needing a trusted time keeper and measuring device at their side. My choice is either the black or blue face with the rubber strap.
