Most all Breguet Classique collection watches have engine turned guilloche machine engraved dials and these are always lovely. Breguet’s historic watches often have dials of this design, and they have actually held up very well after all these years, if you can view one of the original pieces. Around the row of Roman numeral hour markers are actually three different types of guilloche engraving from the Clos du Paris triangles in the middle and different sections on the outer dial as well as in the power reserve indicator zone.
Of course the hands are blued steel and pomme-style, as well as being properly sized. One issue that doesn’t bother me but might bother some collectors is that the dial for the time is off-centered a bit. Breguet likely had to do this in order to fit the tourbillon but also allow for the dial to look properly proportioned. All the legibility is there and I think it gives the watch character, but I know that some people prefer perfectly centered watch dials, and I can respect that.
Breguet uses a 42mm wide case for the Breguet Classique Tourbillon Extra-Plat Automatique 5377, which is probably among the larger sizes for this case style (most Classique watches are under 40mm wide, I believe). The case is very thin at just 7mm thick, which we agree for an automatic tourbillon is “extra flat.” The low profile on the wrist and the wide case size makes for a very bold looking dress-style watch that is nevertheless undeniably a Breguet in character and quality.
It is my belief that the Breguet Classique Tourbillon Extra-Plat Automatique 5377 collection embodies much of what the Breguet brand is known for, while the design and complications are both high-end but imminently wearable for daily use (if you so chose). Sure, there are more complicated and intricate Breguet timepieces, but I think most people will agree that they are not suited well to daily wear given their size or fragility. The Breguet Classique Tourbillon Extra-Plat Automatique 5377 watch is currently available in 18k pink gold or platinum and priced at $149,500 for the ref. 5377BR129WU in 18k rose gold and $163,800 for the ref. 5377PT129WU in platinum. breguet.com
