An Oakland, California-based watch brand specializing in limited production mechanical timepieces and made-to-order models, Bespoke Watch Projects, has become known for its distinctive combination of vintage styling paired with clean modern lines. Inspired by his own collection of sports and military chronographs from the 1960s and ’70s, founder & designer John Beck McConnico just launched a Kickstarter campaign to unveil the new “72 Flyback” Chronograph, a robust heritage-inspired timepiece built for the modern wrist.
The Range
Available in 3 case finishes, 2 dial designs, and 2 leather straps, the 72 Flyback can be built in one of six unique combinations. The range of options is a nod to the bespoke quality of their other watches, while offering a ready-to-ship chronograph at a reasonable price point.
All models from Bespoke Watch Projects are assembled by hand in their California studio, and this watch is no exception. The design, prototyping, and final production were completed over the last ten months, resulting in a piece that is wrist-tested and wrist-ready.
The Design
The asymmetrical case is constructed of solid 316L stainless steel, giving it a satisfying heft without being too clunky. Fitted with a thick domed sapphire crystal, the watch has a dramatic profile that communicates both a vintage and contemporary vibe. A linear brushed finish is applied to the exterior of the case, which is available in a stainless, black PVD, or Gold PVD finish.
The two dial designs also balance modern and heritage styling in a clean manner. The black dial is an elegant minimal option, which shows off the orange & white hands effectively. Likewise, the brushed silver “panda” dial exhibits a dramatic contrast with the black sub-dials. Both dials use a light beige Super-LumiNova applied to the markers (as well as the hour & second hands) for increased visibility at night.
The Movement
The underlying engine powering the 72 Flyback is a VK64 movement, a hybrid “meca-quartz” movement incorporating a mechanical front-end with a smooth-sweeping second hand and flyback action—while using quartz as the underlying power source. With its high degree of accuracy, it’s a reliable solution for a chronograph yet still has the tactile feel of a traditional mechanical movement.
The Kickstarter Campaign
A limited number of Early Bird models will be fully assembled and ready to ship by the end of the Kickstarter campaign (January 3). They are priced at up to 60% savings—from $230 USD to $270 USD—which represents a great value for a limited edition handmade timepiece. All Early Bird editions will include both leather straps (black & brown) and a sleek black travel case.
The campaign goal is to not only deliver the completed watches, but to extend the line to a 2018 Edition watch. Campaign supporters can also select their specific watch options and a new batch will be assembled and shipped in early 2018.
