For its inaugural series of timepieces, Bauche Watches embraces the ethereal magic of the cosmos with its Stargazer Carina Nebula collection. Inspired by the mesmerizing images of the Carina Nebula that were captured by NASA’s James Webb telescope, the Bauche Stargazer Carina Nebula series spans six distinct colorways, and its models showcase breathtaking multi-layered dials that incorporate textured metal, mother-of-pearl, and meteorite to create a striking range of space-themed watches.

Crafted entirely from 904L stainless steel for maximum longevity and an unrivaled visual luster, the cases of Bauche Stargazer Carina Nebula watches measure 41mm in diameter by 12.95mm thick with an overall lug-to-lug profile of 47mm, and they feature brushed middle sections paired with mirror-polished bezels to create a refined appearance that is both elegant and versatile. To help promote a sense of visual symmetry, the 9 o’clock side of the case extends to mirror the faceted shape of the crown guards, and the signed winding crown at 3 o’clock screws down to the middle case to help create an ample 120 meters of water resistance. Flat anti-reflective sapphire crystals sit within the polished bezels to protect the multi-material dials, while the reverse side of the Stargazer Carina Nebula watches receive solid stainless steel casebacks that are secured by six small screws and adorned with an emblem of an astronaut to further establish the collection’s ties to outer space.

While the dynamic 904L stainless steel cases are certainly a highlight of the collection, the true stars of the Bauche Stargazer Carina Nebula watches are their dials, which feature a multi-layered structure that harmoniously incorporates three different materials in an asymmetric pattern inspired by the formation of the Carina Nebula. The central portion of the dial consists of a piece of IP-treated metal with a stamped guilloché pattern, while colored mother-of-pearl is used for the section that contains the power reserve indicator on the upper left-hand portion of the display. Additionally, a slice of IP-finished meteorite appears along the opposite side of the dial, and it features a trapezoid-shaped aperture at 3 o’clock that frames the date window to create added depth and dimension for the calendar display.

Applied hour markers are attached to the multi-layered dials of the Bauche Stargazer Carina Nebula series, and surrounding their outer perimeters are raised chapter rings in a contrasting hue of pale silver. Additionally, rather than being printed directly on the surface of the dial, Bauche’s signature elegantly appears on small mirror-polished plates that are applied to the elevated chapter rings directly above the 12 o’clock index. A trio of centrally-mounted hands is tasked with displaying the time, and while the hour and minute hands are both dauphine-shaped with luminous inlays and a high-polished finish, the thin needle-shaped seconds hands are brightly colored to complement the dials of each watch. The power reserve is tracked by a smaller dauphine-shaped hand that resides between the 9 o’clock and 10 o’clock positions, and the hands and hour markers on Bauche’s Stargazer Carina Nebula models receive an application of Super-LumiNova to provide them with either a green or blue-colored glow in the dark.

The pattern of the stamped guilloché sections on the Bauche Stargazer Carina Nebula collection’s dials is intended to evoke the essence of light-speed travel, and their colors include coffee brown, gray, dark blue, black, and green. Meanwhile, the mother-of-pearl used for the power reserve indicator is intended to emulate a portal into the cosmos that captures humanity’s desire for space exploration, and either classic mother-of-pearl or abalone can be used for this section, with colors that include cream, black and red, or two different shades of blue and green. Lastly, the meteorite portions of the dial are IP-finished in either gray, coffee brown, dark blue, black, or purple to complement or contrast with the various other colors that appear within the stamped guilloché and mother-of-pearl sections on each watch. All of the colors featured throughout the six Stargazer Carina Nebula models are inspired by what can be observed in the James Webb telescope’s images of the Carina Nebula, and due to the naturally occurring materials that are used in the construction of their dials, no two Stargazer Carina Nebula watches will ever be entirely identical.

Powering the Bauche Stargazer Carina Nebula collection is the Japanese-manufactured Miyota Caliber 9133 automatic movement, which is universally trusted throughout the industry for its reliability and consistent performance. Operating at a frequency of 28,800vph (4 Hz) with a power reserve of approximately 40 hours, the venerable Cal. 9133 expands upon the blueprint of the standard time-and-date version of Miyota’s premium Cal. 9xxx movements, while still offering the same proven design that has made the series a favorite within the industry. In addition to featuring both a hacking seconds mechanism and the ability to be wound either manually or automatically, the Miyota 9133 also includes a power reserve indicator, which tracks the Stargazer Carina Nebula’s 40 hours of autonomy with an arc-shaped display on the upper left portion of the dial.

Fitted to the lugs of the Bauche Stargazer Carina Nebula watches are two-piece straps, which are made from supple black leather and taper from 20mm at the case down to 18mm where they connect to their tang-style buckles. The straps attach to the lugs with integrated quick-release springbars to enable easy tool-free strap changes, and all of the straps are completed by solid stainless steel pin buckles that are signed with Bauche’s logo and finished with contrasting brushed and polished surfaces to match the cases of the Stargazer Carina Nebula series. The black grain-textured leather straps offer a classic and highly versatile aesthetic that can effortlessly integrate into either formal or casual settings, although the inclusion of quick-release springbars invites owners to switch up the straps on their watches, should they seek a more personalized appearance.

The Bauche Stargazer Carina Nebula collection will debut on Kickstarter with an official launch date of October 18, 2024, and it will be accompanied by an introductory price of $855 USD during the pre-order phase and an official retail price of $988 USD thereafter. Additionally, for those who wish to go hands-on with the Stargazer Carina Nebula series and experience the watches in the metal, prototypes for the collection will be available during the Kickstarter pre-order campaign at the microbrand watch fair Spring Sprang Sprung, which will be held in Singapore from October 18 through October 20, 2024. As the brand’s inaugural series of timepieces, the Stargazer Carina Nebula collection marks the beginning of the journey for Bauche Watches, and its distinct design and striking multi-material layered dials pay tribute to humanity’s eternal fascination with the cosmos.
