Analysis

My colleagues will be sharing their thoughts on Audemars Piguet’s new collection in their respective write-ups but here’s mine. I don’t necessarily like all of the models, in fact, I question some of their design choices. However, I have to applaud AP for their courage. At a time when most of the watch industry is content to dig through their archives and re-release or “reinterpret” past references, what AP is doing deserves some respect.

At any rate, the Audermars Piguet Code 11.59 Minute Repeater Supersonnie makes a very strong case for being the best-looking watch in the new collection. The dial is actually smoked-blue enamel and is simple and clean. Just 12, 3, and 9 Arabic hour markers, baton markers in between, and a subsidiary seconds dial at 6 o’clock. That’s all there is to it. It looks deceptive simple unless you know where to look. A slider at the side of the case at around 8 o’clock hints at the watch’s striking capabilities.

Inside beats the caliber 2953, which is based on the caliber 2937 found in the Royal Oak Concept Supersonnerie. It’s called a Supersonnerie because of the unique way the watch is constructed to amplify the chimes. Traditionally, the gongs are attached to the main plate, but here, they are attached to a device that acts as a soundboard that makes it louder. The outer case back is also perforated to allow sound to pass through with less interference.

Conclusion

My heart ached when I found out that this was a minute repeater watch. I love how simple and clean the smoked blue enamel dial is. I also think the new case design is quite striking. However, at close to 300,000 Swiss francs, this is a watch that is out of the reach for most. Still, one can admire its looks and also the technology that goes into improving its chiming mechanism.
