So the idea of the two mainspring barrels is that one “kicks in” to supply axillary power to the main spring in order to keep the torque curve steadier – at least that is how I understand it. Mechanical watches of this ilk have never been designed for optimal accuracy, so to see that feature in the Arnold & Son Time Pyramid is interesting.
On the wrist, the Arnold & Son Time Pyramid has a rather grand presence. First of all, because it is a large 44.6mm wide 18k red gold watch, and second of all, because of the vivid design of the movement. You really need to observe the design of many other watch movements intended to be so visible to appreciate the various colors and finishes that Arnold & Son chose for the A&S1615 movement to make it so nicely for viewing in many lighting situations.
At the top of the “pyramid” is the watch’s balance wheel, which constantly spins to create an interesting sense of movement. I like how the balance wheel moves the most quickly, sitting over the slower seconds hand, and that sits over the slower hour and minute hands. Overall, the movement and design of the Arnold & Son Time Pyramid kept my attention and spirits for the watch very high – even though I had to look at my wrist hair each time I went to admire the dial.
On the wrist, the 44.6mm wide case is large but wears comfortably, as the lugs wrap around your wrist and the back is pretty flat. I like that the crown is moved to the 6 o’clock position which just enhances the overall sense of symmetry that I appreciate so much in the design. Attached to the case is a fitted alligator strap. It is further not that surprising that the watch has only 30 meters of water resistance, so no sports with the Arnold & Son Time Pyramid on.
As I keep saying, Arnold & Son has been able to keep up with creating really cool watches that we love to think of as being ideal dress watches for watch lovers that everyone can get behind. The brand is really good for those looking for exclusivity, aesthetics, but also a serious focus on nerdy watch movement stuff (as inelegant a term as that sounds, it is important). What does that mean? These are great watches for watch snobs that lay people can appreciate, and won’t think are weird. That pretty much sums it up.
For mechanical movement lovers watches like the Time Pyramid are easy to enjoy and you’ll probably spend most time admiring the movement while looking at the dial and forgetting to check the time. Sure, Arnold & Son can take the watch even further and produce a Time Pyramid Tourbillon or other enhancements on the design. Those will of course be much more expensive. While not an inexpensive watch, the Arnold & Son Time Pyramid ref. 1TPAR.S01A.C124A in 18k red gold feels like a good value with a retail price of $40,350. arnoldandson.com
