Alexander Shorokov, the artist who founded his eponymous Alexander Shorokhoff watch brand in Germany more than 20 years ago, is coming to the U.S. to meet with collectors at the boutiques that represent his work. Shorokov will showcase his collections with his newest creations, like the hand-engraved Wintergenta, the colorful and playful Cadamomo, and the award-winning Shar and Merkur.
The tour began at Little Treasury Jewelers in Gambrills, Maryland on August 10th and will move to Right Time Watches in Denver, Colorado on August 14th, concluding at Grenon‘s of Newport in Newport, Rhode Island on August 17th.
Shorokov, who was born in Moscow in 1960, studied architecture and is a trained civil engineer, the genesis of his flair for forms and colors and his aptitude for extraordinary design. (Note that Shorokov uses the Russian spelling of his name, while his namesake brand uses the German.)
By an arrangement between German federal chancellor Helmut Kohl and Russian president Michail Gorbatshov, he came to Germany in 1991 to further his education at the Ministry of Economics in Hessen. Just one year later, he established distribution for the largest and most important Russian brand, Poljot, before establishing his first in-house watch brand, Poljot International, in 1994.
Shorokov is legendary for never being satisfied with doing things by halves. He desired to craft his own original watches with the highest standards of artisanship, quality, and design. In 2002, in the heart of Alzenau, Germany, a small idyllic town in Bavaria, he established the Alexander Shorokhoff Watch Manufacture. This set the stage for global recognition.
His many awards include the New York Design Award, the German Design Award, and the iF Design Award. The early Avantgarde line set Shorokov apart by staking out its own design language, a risk-taking and aesthetically driven collection that pushes classical Modernism into contemporary form with its “art on the wrist” ethos that features unique color combinations juxtaposed with precise shapes, resulting in groundbreaking collectible timepieces.
Shorokov says, “If you call a brand after yourself, you connect all your life with it. Your life, from that moment, belongs to the brand with all responsibilities coming from that.” The harmonious way in which Alexander Shorokhoff watches have evolved over the last three decades reflects his place among the rarified air of great watchmakers the world over. His ability to break rules successfully is just one of the building blocks of his namesake brand.
Now, watch collectors in the U.S. have a chance to meet Shorokov in person and talk with him about his most recent designs. Catch him at Right Time Watches in Denver, Colorado on August 14th, or at Grenon‘s of Newport in Newport, Rhode Island on August 17th.
Alexander Shorokhoff watches are available from authorized dealers worldwide and via the company’s website.
