Combining precision craftsmanship with a bold and distinct design language, Aeronom is an independent German brand that produces small-batch, limited-edition watches designed for modern urban life. Based in the renowned watchmaking town of Pforzheim, Germany, Aeronom represents the fusion of tradition and style, blending the worlds of horology and fashion to create strong yet sophisticated timepieces that embody the spirit of the streets. Taking the core blueprint of its inaugural model and giving it a stealthy all-black appearance, Aeronom is bringing back its fan-favorite Aero One watch for 2023 — however, this time the brand is taking things up a notch by giving it a jet-black DLC finish. Infusing a striking and brutalist design with the spirit of modern streetwear culture, the new Aeronom Aero One BLK aims to be a go-anywhere timekeeping companion built for today’s urban adventurers.
Crafted entirely from 316L stainless steel, the case of the Aeronom Aero One BLK features polished accents set against matte sandblasted surfaces to highlight the angular lines of its bold and uncompromising form. While the top of the bezel measures 41.5mm in diameter, the case itself comes in at 46mm at its widest point, thanks to the set of crown guards and the protrusion on the 9 o’clock side, which provides the case with a striking and symmetrical profile. The top of the case receives a 2.5mm thick flat sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment on the underside surface, while the bezel surrounding it features a 120-click unidirectional rotating design that offers a firm and satisfying motion with plenty of grip, thanks to the finely knurled diamond pattern that appears along its outer edge. Rather than fearing a traditional graduated scale, the bezel on the Aero One BLK is entirely devoid of any numerals or text, and a single 1.8mm genuine black diamond is set into the surface to denote the zero marker.
Despite the sizable diameter of the case, the short angular lugs of the Aeronom Aero One BLK help create a surprisingly manageable presence on the wrist, and they extend to offer an overall lug-to-lug profile of approximately 51mm. The reverse side of the Aero One BLK receives a caseback that is secured by four screws around the perimeter, and it features a small circular display window above the balance wheel, along with an engraving of each watch’s individual limited-edition number out of 200 examples. Meanwhile, sitting between the two guards at the 3 o’clock location is a signed crown that screws down to the middle case in order to help ensure the model’s 100 meters of water resistance. While the fundamental design of the case will be familiar to those who have previous experience with the original version of the Aero One, the matte sandblasted surfaces and jet-black DLC coating ultimately provide the new Aero One BLK with a significantly different overall aesthetic.
To match the stealthy appearance of its case, the Aeronom Aero One BLK is fitted with a matte black dial that reimagines the style found on the brand’s original Aero One watch. The dial features a trio of centrally-mounted baton hands for displaying the time, along with an additional 24-hour register at 9 o’clock and an arch-shaped date window sitting opposite it at the 3 o’clock location that recalls the appearance of analog flight instruments. While the dial text itself is white for maximum contrast, the hands and applied hour markers are given a metallic black finish to complement both the dial surface itself and the DLC coating on the surrounding case. Additionally, to help enhance the low-light legibility of its display, the hands and hour markers on the Aero One BLK are finished with Super-LumiNova G1 to provide them with a bright green glow-in-the-dark hue.
Powering the Aeronom Aero One BLK is the Miyota Cal. 8217 automatic movement, which offers a reliable and proven design, along with the ability to be easily maintained by just about any watchmaker in the entire world. Running at a frequency of 21,600vph (3 Hz) with a power reserve of approximately 42 hours, the Miyota 8217 inside the Aero One BLK is guaranteed to operate within the timekeeping standards of -10/+20 seconds per day, and it also provides users with magnetic resistance up to 4,800 A/m. In addition to offering hacking, hand-winding, and quick-set adjustability for the date display, the Miyota 8217 movement also features a secondary sub-dial that displays the time in a 24-hour format, which has the added benefit of functioning as an ever-present AM/PM indicator. Built upon one of the most popular self-winding movement designs in the entire world, the Miyota 8217 promises to offer a drama-free ownership experience, along with an ample supply of replacement parts should repairs or service ever be necessary at some point in the future.
Fitted to the angular lugs of the Aeronom Aero One BLK is the brand’s signature Tank Strap, which is crafted from stainless steel and given a matte black DLC finish to match the case. The links of the bracelet offer a three-piece semicircular design that is comfortable on the wrist, while simultaneously striking a perfect aesthetic balance between strength and refinement. Tapering from 22mm at the case down to 20mm at the clasp, the bracelet features a completely solid-link construction, and despite offering an integrated appearance with the case, the end-links connect to the lugs with standard quick-release springbars to facilitate easy and tool-free strap changes. Securing the Aero One BLK’s bracelet to the wrist is a machined butterfly-style folding clasp, which has been given a matte black DLC finish to match the rest of the watch. Signed with the brand’s logo, the double folding clasp offers a thin, streamlined profile on the wrist, and it creates a continuous and seamless appearance once the double push-button release is securely latched and in the closed position.
Bold and modern, yet maintaining a strong commitment to premium craftsmanship and the art of mechanical timekeeping, the new Aeronom Aero One BLK is the perfect watch for streetwear enthusiasts who have a love of horology, and it offers a striking and uncompromising design that embodies the spirit of contemporary urban life. Produced as an exclusive limited edition of just 200 pieces worldwide, the Aeronom Aero One BLK is accompanied by an official retail price of €595 EUR (or approximately $635 USD, at the time of launch), and each individual watch is engraved with its own unique limited-edition number. While watchmaking often focuses on tradition, the Aero One BLK is firmly grounded in the present, and it represents a decidedly modern offering that combines a centuries-old craft with the bold mentality of contemporary street culture.
