My love for A. Lange & Söhne‘s steel Odysseus “leisure watch” is no secret. In fact, it’s loudly broadcast to anyone who will listen (willingly or otherwise). Now, for Watches & Wonders 2020, the brand has released a second model that adds to the steel bracelet version and is done in a white gold case with a new gray dial that has some variances from its blue sibling. And, of course, Lange is offering this Odysseus on either a rubber or leather strap.

Countless words have been written about the A. Lange & Söhne Odysseus (you can read two informative articles of ours here and here), so I am just going to focus this article on what’s new with this model, as opposed to getting into too much detail. Unchanged in size, the 40.5mm case is done in white gold with matching white gold hands and applied indices, as well. Just judging from the photos, it looks like the legibility is pretty good when you look at how the hands contrast against the gray dial.
Where the blue steel Odysseus dial had guilloché work and grained texture across the dial, this new gray dial opts for a radial pattern around the hour markers and around the circumference of the seconds subdial. It’s hard to totally gauge how these will look in person, but I can’t imagine the finishing isn’t near-perfect.
And now on to what will likely be the most controversial part of this new Odysseus: the leather and rubber integrated strap options. The leather is quite conservative, done in a dark brown with gray stitching. The rubber strap is the one I’d prefer, coming in all-black with two decorative stripes that track from the case. The rubber strap also has air ducts on the inside to increase comfort of wear. This is another part of the watch that I look forward to seeing and wearing in person.
The A. Lange & Söhne Odysseus is a watch that is considerably rare and hard to get, even for buyers with the means. As far as I can tell, its most dedicated collectors will be getting first dibs on these for quite some time. The steel Odysseus carries a price of $28,800, while this white gold model is substantially more at $40,600. If there’s ever a white gold bracelet version introduced, you’ll probably find me selling all my material possessions. You can learn more at alange-soehne.com.
