While there are many boutique watch brands creating disruptive designs, they tend to be timepieces that are attainable by an extremely limited proportion of watch enthusiasts. At SaStek watches, we believe such expression of one’s individuality should be available at an accessible cost. Hence, SaStek watches was created with the goal of making unique timepieces that express time in a different manner. The first collection, Time Speed Indicator, starts on a clean sheet of paper with a design that takes inspiration from cockpit instrumentation and jet engines. Amalgamating an automatic movement with an edgy case and intriguing design elements, the end result is a cool and unique watch that is unlike any other.
Concept
The SaStek Time Speed Indicator’s design takes inspiration from aircraft cockpit instruments as well as jet engines. The hour and minute displays are designed along the lines of a Machmeter instrument, aka Air Speed Indicator, which measures the speed of an aircraft. The name of the watch is a take on the same ideology, i.e., measuring the speed of time, hence the name Time Speed Indicator. The design aesthetic didn’t really need a seconds hand, but it is important to have a visual cue to the functioning of the watch. The spinner profile painted on the nose cone of a jet engine enables ground crew to immediately know whether the engine is spinning or not. The seconds disc on the watch features the same profile so users can glance at the smooth sweep working of the reliable Miyota 9015 automatic movement underneath.
Case/ Caseback
The case of the watch is a bespoke design, crafted out of 316L stainless steel followed by sandbasting and coating to achieve an understated industrial texture. Measuring 44 x 52 x 9.5mm, the watch features a low profile, and the chamfered lugs make the watch sit comfortably and close to the wrist. The crown continues on the aviation theme with a knurled design giving great feedback while winding the automatic movement as well as showcasing the SaStek lambda logo. No aviation inspired watch would be complete without a premium material crystal to top is off. The SaStek Time Speed Indicator uses a sapphire crystal – which is second to diamond in hardness, rated 9/10 on the Mohs hardness scale – to ensure the watch is crystal clear to read for years.
The case back is an original design which started off as a vision of a pilot sitting within the cockpit. Once engraved on the case back, it’s a beautiful representation of the theme of the watch along with the Time Speed Indicator name and the water resistance rating of 5 ATM. Although an open case back is the ideal choice to gaze into the workings of an automatic movement, the finish on them would be out of sync with the contemporary design of the watch, hence the decision to omit it.
Dial & Hands
Aviation cockpit instruments feature a primary scale with a smaller, scrolling-digit secondary display. The SaStek Time Speed Indicator builds up on this characteristic and splits the hour and minute functions into two separate levels. The dial features printed numerals for hours on a circular guilloche pattern which adds depth and dimension. The hour hand with its bright colour, contrasts well against the dial for a quick read out. The minute detail is read through a printed window on the crystal with the minute disc rotating underneath it. Although the second’s disc is unique and distinct with the jet engine spinner motif, it rotates imperceptibly, lending itself to a gentle display of the functioning of the watch.
At night, the SaStek Time Speed Indicator turns into an interesting single-handed watch. On traditional watches, the complete face of the watch is exposed to light which charges up the luminous paint. On this watch, the minute disc is viewed through a window which means that the above concept wouldn’t work. The solution, by dividing hours on the dial into four, 15 minute quadrants and having an hour hand with a C1 Super-LumiNova® marker, time can be read with good accuracy.
Movement
At the heart of the SaStek Time Speed Indicator is the Miyota 9015 automatic movement. With its slim profile, excellent price-performance ratio, and reliability, it is the ideal choice for this price range. Featuring a 42-hour power reserve, 24-jewel movement running at 28,800 beats per hour, it can be wound by hand as well as automatically through daily use. Though a Swiss movement would have been the ideal choice, factoring in price point of the offering, lack of an open case back as well as the limited performance gap between Japanese and Swiss movements, the decision to use a Miyota 9015 is a reliable and proven one.
