The P-51 Mustang Pilot’s Watch – a timepiece inspired by an iconic WWII story
In 2016, RSC Pilot Watches became the principal sponsor of a fully renovated fighter plane. This American P-51 Mustang with the eccentric name “Scat VII” entered active duty in the latter stages of WWII. The plane was piloted by triple ace Robin Olds – later, brigadier general Olds – who went on to become an aviation legend by commanding the Air Force wing that shot down seven MIGs over North Vietnam in the biggest air battle of the Vietnam War.
Historic plane enthusiasts and experienced watchmakers Ronald and Guido Steffen from Antwerp, Belgium, decided to pay homage to Olds by creating a watch that shares the same dynamism, agility, and craftsmanship as his legendary airplane. Power and speed were to be the key words.
Having Swiss roots themselves, the brothers decided to incorporate a Swiss ETA automatic 2824-2 movement in the design as to guarantee the watch’s pedigree and accuracy. Detailing is as refined as the P-51 Mustang itself. This is an exclusive watch and only a limited number of watches will be produced, the exact amount determined by the number of orders received on online funding platform Kickstarter.com. The RSC P-51 Mustang SCAT7 watches originate from the same atelier that produces the premium “STEFFEN.be” collection, so the same stringent quality standards apply.
About RSC Watches designer Ronald Steffen
RSC is a Belgian brand started by brothers Ronald and Guido Steffen, both born in Zug, Switzerland. Ronald Steffen is no stranger to the watchmaking industry, having started the brand “Steffen” in 2006. The Steffen collection consists of premium Swiss Made timepieces, for both men and women. The brothers decided in 2014 to branch out, introducing a line of pilot’s watches to the market. Unique, quality-driven watches that offer exceptional value for money.
The P-51 Mustang watch
The design of the RSC P-51 Mustang SCAT7 watch was inspired by the aviation industry and the Mustang P-51 plane in particular. Two designs are made available to buyers. Both watches feature a double-layer dial with oversized numbers 6 and 9. This gives definition to the watch. The first design combines a black and a military green dial, both dials are welded together, creating an eternal bond. The second design has two black dials, the front one being sandblasted and therefore matte in appearance. This contrast between textures gives the watch a unique aesthetic. Large luminous numbers and stripes offer excellent readability in low-light conditions.
Build
The expression “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts” certainly applies to the RSC P-51 Mustang SCAT7 watch. The 20 separate parts that make up this unique timepiece are manually assembled to create a perfect wrist watch. The RSC P-51 Mustang SCAT7 watch also features a solid, screwed case back with notches. The front and back of the watch are covered by scratch-resistant sapphire glass, an absolute necessity in a pilot’s watch of this calibre. The watch’s movement is installed from the top, creating unparalleled stability. The crown is screwed into the watch at a slight angle, making the piece water resistant up to 10 ATM. The face of the RSC P-51 Mustang SCAT7 watch also indicates the date, with juxtaposing white digits on a black background. The 316L stainless steel case is partly polished, partly matte brushed. Minor details such as the delicate screws which hold together the case are testament to the craftsmanship that goes into each watch.
A watch band can be compared to a car’s rims, an essential aspect of the aesthetic, yet in essence about functionality and durability. The RCS’s watchbands are made in Germany from calfskin and offer exceptional durability and comfort. Available to the buyer are 6 different bands.
The RSC P-51 Mustang SCAT7 Pilot’s Watch is perfect for someone who values craftsmanship, quality, and the individuality of a limited-run timepiece. This is a must-have for pilots, aviation buffs, and watch connoisseurs alike. An exclusive accessory that draws heavily on the heroics of a legendary fighter pilot and his airplane.
