It’s amazing what can result from an interest in both sports cars and luxury watches. Two Vancouver entrepreneurs and brothers have created a watch designed to reflect the kind of tachometer you’ll usually find in sports cars. With over 20 combined years of experience in product design and development, Ari and Bob Shahbahshi have created other products such as bicycles (fixed gear and folding bikes), wallets, and other accessories in the past. The duo have already spearheaded two successful watch campaigns and are back on Kickstarter to champion their latest, coined as the Ferro Distinct 2.
The love of sports cars and watches inspired the brothers to come up with their single-hand Ferro Distinct watch line that reflects automobile tachometers.
Ferro Watches boast a single-handed display, a minimalist design that echoes iconic sports car tachometers. This timepiece will be available in two colours – a black face with a red hand and black Italian leather straps, or a white face with a black hand and brown Italian leather straps. However, watch enthusiasts will have the choice of either strap color for their watches. However, as the campaign is still live, Ari and Bob are looking to add third and fourth dial colors. Your suggestions will be very valuable and helpful.
Each Ferro Distinct 2 watch is 100 meters water-resistant and constructed using a polished stainless steel case with 22mm lugs, an onion shaped screw-in crown, and stainless steel pin buckle. The glass is double-domed sapphire crystal on automatic ETA or Miyota watches, or flat sapphire crystal on Ronda quartz watches. As the Ferro Distinct 2 watch tells the time with only a single hand, it was crucial to house the dial in a 44mm case, so there will be enough space for index markings to make time-reading easier. The lug-to-lug dimension of the Ferro Distinct 2 watch is 52mm.
Ferro Distinct watches offer 3 different movements to choose from. The first option is a Swiss Ronda Normtech Caliber 715 movement that offers accurate timekeeping while keeping the price point affordable to most watch lovers. The Normtech 715 offers a very long battery life and power-saving mechanism with a pulled-out stem. This version of the watches comes with a flat sapphire crystal. These quartz models start from CAN $199 (approx. US$150).
The second option will be with a Japanese Miyota 8215 automatic movement with see-through back case and double-domed sapphire crystal. The 21-jewel Miyota movement operates at 21,600bph, or 6 beats per second (3Hz). The automatic Miyota models start from CAN $349 (US$264).
And the third option is the limited edition Ferro Distinct 2 Swiss ETA 2824-2 automatic movement for watch collectors or aficionados. The 25-jewel movement operates at 28,800bph or 4Hz, which is smoother than the rival Miyota 8215. The ETA 2824-2 is widely used by many Swiss luxury brands. The ETA 2824-2 watches will not only come with double-domed sapphire crystal, but also with a pair of leather driving gloves and worldwide shipping for the duration of their Kickstarter campaign. Automatic ETA models start from CAN $779 (US$599) including the leather driving gloves and worldwide shipping.
Here’s how to read time with a single-hand watch:
The smallest lines represent 5-minute increments, the medium lines represent 15-minute increments, the large lines represent 30-minute increments, and the extra large lines represent 1-hour increments. The arm revolves around the face every 12 hours.
The Ferro Watches company was formed in 2014 with a vision of bringing inspirational watch designs to life. The company has already shipped over 1,500 timepieces worldwide including the Distinct 1 and Airborne Pilot watches (inspired by vintage aviation) and is aiming to have their watches in retailers worldwide.
