1. The Harry Winston Vianney Halter Opus 3

Opus 3

For each of the past thirteen years, Harry Winston has collaborated with a master watchmaker to create a special watch that was simply known as the Opus. A decade ago, the Harry Winston worked with Vianney Halter to create the Opus III.  Vianney Halter is the man behind the iconic Antiqua and more recently, the Deep Space Tourbillon. The Opus III was remarkable because of its design and movement – which tells time using jumping indicators. The watch faced numerous difficulties in development and production, but is now finally ready for delivery. Here’s one of the finished pieces and it is truly an amazing watch.

2. Comparison: Blancpain Bathyscaphe vs. Fifty Fathoms

Blancpain

The Blancpain Fifty Fathoms was one of the first diving watches ever made. To commemorate the 60th anniversary of the original Fifty Fathoms, Blancpain released the Bathyscape this year. The Bathyscape is slimmer and smaller than the Fifty Fathoms and also comes in at a more affordable price point. As befits a watch with diving provenance, the Bathyscape is water resistant to 300m and features a unidirectional bezel that has a ceramic insert and a graduated scale made out of Liquidmetal. See how the new Bathyscape matches up to the Fifthy Fathoms.

3. Audemars Piguet Restoration Workshop

AP

Ever wonder how vintage or complicated timepieces get serviced? At Audemars Piguet, there’s the AP Restoration Workshop, a very special room located at the highest level of Jules Audemars’ original house in Le Brassus, Valle de Joux. This was also same the room that Jules Audemars and Edward Piguet worked in after the founding of the company in 1875. This is a rare glimpse into what is certainly one of the most special rooms, both historically and technically, in all of horology.

4. Accuracy Vs. Precision: Understanding Watch Performance

Patek

Your English teacher might use the words accuracy and precision interchangeably, but in the world of science and measurement, they mean two completely different but related concepts. To really understand how good a watch is at telling time, one must understand the concepts of accuracy and precision. And this post neatly explains what the two terms mean and how one should go about determining whether his or her watch is truly good at what it was designed to do – that is to tell time.

5. What Do a $59 and $15k Watch Have in Common? Crowd Sourcing

MVMT

Recently, I noticed there has been an increase in the number of crowd funded watch initiatives. Thanks to websites like Kickstarter and Indiegogo, and the success of the Pebble, aspiring designers and watchmakers have taken to the internet in hopes of getting the support to create their timepieces. However, these have thus far been restricted to more affordable pieces – until now. Oliver Ike, founder of Ikepod, is hoping to raise $850,000 for a new watch.
